Petrols are heavy on fuel :? \

3.0 litres blow up

4.2 turbo diesels are the pick of the bunch though can do with a bit of extra boost & a fiddle with the pump to get them to perform. SUPER reliable & the running gear's bullet proof.

Plenty of after market accessories for them both new & second hand aswell.

I've done 50,000k in the last 12 months & the only prob I've had was breaking my front auto hubs which I replaced with GQ free wheeling hubs. Though I was giving it a pretty hard time to break those hubs :?.

Have a look through the Nissan section on the forum for all the details ;)

And your GU's a ?????

My guess is it's a 3.0 litre .

Do your home work. Have a look how many 3.0 litres have blown up around (if not before) the 100,000k mark & how many k's people are getting out of the 4.2s' :?.

I'm sure there's a few people here on the forum who can back me up :D.

Considering you're a mechanic, one would think you'd be aware of this .....

ive seen td42's with over 300kms on them boosted to over 20 psi and raped like a young boy in prison just lap it up and keep coming back for more.

mate of mine boiled his bone dry and kept flogging it all the way home countless times b4 it let go. and all it took was a new head gasket and it was ready for it again.

youve got your wires crossed tis as simple as that
1hd-fte 5 speed tiptronic 105 series
78 series troopy for work
gu ute play truck For sale
FTE 80 series sahara Sold

i think i have a problem

the 4.2 is a good motor and a good truck i have one and am happy with it .

stay clear from the 2.8 and 3.0 litres as they are very problematic in the engine department and i am a mechanic seen this many times .

And get rid of the pipe just after the turbo with the factory restrictor in it, It slows the turbo down, just get a full 3" system then do what GU bug said above.

A workmate had this done to his 4.2 GU and it was a different truck afterwards, in a very good way :D
(At first he just swapped the exhaust section with the restrictor for a straight through pipe and just that made heaps of difference.)

I would stay away from any early 3 litre but i would buy one that was built after 2003 (i think thats the date where they changed some things) I ahve done a few good long trips in my mates. Thats not to say i dont prefer a 4.2.

Up at Robe we were killing other GU's with turbo 4.2's. But each to their own.

Are the later models still blowing up??

Was this related to existing issues? Are you saying there are as many failers with the new 3 litres?

3.0 vs 4.2

Post by gqtrol »

sounds like the age old question holden vs ford opinion here the old 3 litres stay clear but nissan in the later models fixed the faults I had a mate working at a reco shop on average they were doing 7-10 gu 4.2 gaskets and heads per week i have also heard reports of 3ltrs breaking down sounds like you all need to suck it up and realize that nothing has 100% reliabilty and every thing has its pros and cons and if you stay on top with servicing and use gen or quality parts/oils you shouldn't have mamy issues if i had the choice i would probably opt for the 3ltr for one look at the price of diesel these days.If your looking into doing some touring as much as i hate to admit it go buy a 60 series landcrusier the most simplest 4wd out there you could fix 60 series with a leathermans some duct tape and a couple of cables ties. But to finish off what i am saying is every man to himself and that is just my opinion

Not getting defensive mate, just making sure some poor bugger out there is informed about the 3.0 litres probs & doesn't make the same mistake so many others have (you included :D).
