Anyone ever had a spare wheel carrier crack or break on them?
If so:
What broke?
Custom or commercial?
Type and number of of pivot? e.g. bearings, bush
Type and number of latch(es)?
How many km on it? and proportion spent offroad or on long trips.

A mates one is stuffed.
Locking pin/latch/attachment broke. fixed it a few times and keeps breaking. snapped the pin off.
also bearings have now flogged out and ruined carrier tops. not too hard to fix apparently.
commercial - cant remember brand, its on a 60series. single bolt on swing arm.
Two bearing pivot i believe
1 latch (14mm pin approx with wire thingo to keep it closed.
offroad 80% most being flogged over anything thats driveable and some others.
Hope mine will be better using a better catch and also a trailer stub+bearing.

Im here for the sausage!
Swing Away wheel carrier.
Have built a couple now, no problems yet. Use trailer axle stub and bearings. Will need to replace bearings every so often as with any moving item. However after looking at a factory landrover carrier I noticed it did not have any locking pins it actually pivoted with the side swinging door.
I have since used this principle on Discos, Troopies and Parados that all have side swinging doors that use to carry the spare tyre. I basically get a short drag link from the wrecker (20-30cms long) and make a bracket to go on the door plus one on the carrier and hey presto the carrier swings with the door. Two other things I do to assist this and stop the carrier jumping around is to but a nylon slide between the carrier and bumper so it reduces verticle movement and I also place a rubber stopper (usually a engine style mount cut in half so it adjustable)between the carrier and the door.
I should probably design and patten this, but too much trouble so go for your life.
Cheers
