MSD Universal Boost Timming Master
hi
Sorry about all the new threads and shit but thought i would ask becuase a guy has for sale one of these for $180 and i'm putting together a TB42 with a Garrett T04E turbo and the dyno tune guy said that i will need something to stop me pinging etc.
Will this suit or fit my 1988 SWB For Maverick with a TB42?
How much are these units new because i have no idea..
http://www.msdignition.com/tc_18.htm
Thanks alot guys becuase i have no idea if i even need one becuase my car will be running straight gas.
Cheers
Rick.

if you are running an aftermarket ecu you will not need this. If you arnt then you can just knock the timing back across the board. You will still make power but it will be a bit like custard with out any timing in it plus your engine temps will rise even more without any timing. Mine used to run like this b4 AM ecu, still massive difference to standard. I never ran more than 8psi boost though. I personally would decompress your motor and you will instantly be able to put more timing into it. make it a WHOLE different car
.
180 is a good price i have one sitting here to go into a mates car cost him 240 i beleive 2nd hand
there around 350us retail
there not the greatest from what ive found but they work if your not after 100% peak power but if your after a reliable setup and dont want ever single hp the engine can produce
best bet is to get the dizzy recurved (assuming it has one) and get it modded to suit boost properly

Well my Tb42 doesn't have a computer at all it's a dinosaur.
The guy that will dyno my car later on said that it's going to be hard to get the timming right and stuff like that becuase he can get timming right when not in boost but soon as boost hits my car will ping and shit and cause problems.
So with this i will be able to set the timming perfect for both boost and not..
Cheers

How much boost r u going to run? I still would decompress it >8 psi. Everyone says you dont have to which is true but if you do it will allow alot more timing and turn it into an animal of a car. Mine from standard comp to decomp was like drive 2 totally different cars. One that would go hard! and 1 that f@#ken goes hard

duno about fuel economy mine is not asn everyday driver but who really cares your bolting a turbo onto a big 6 your economy is f@#d anyway.
Mulisha i used 2 genuine nissan headgaskets no probs yet. If i was to do it again i would cc the head and get the conbustion chamber ground out this would mean you only need 1 head gasket. This is what i will b doing if i ever have an issue with. I alredy had the 2 gaskets so i just used them. It not that expensive to get this done bout $300 to get the head done $80 to face it(you should do this anyway when you pull a head off) and another $100 for the gasket. So its $200 more than 2 gaskets. Saying all this i havnt had a prob with 2 gaskets yet.
All these theories of low comp shouldnt decomp i believe are base on motors that are alot more advanced than the 2 valve push rod that we have
How much boost are you going to run.
Dont 4get your clutch.
Go for it i rekon.

Cheers guys for the replys i'm looking at running 10PSi.
So with 10psi do you think decomp will be needed or should my car handle 10PSI without?
Also how much boost can u run on these engines before you would start running into trouble like melting pistons and shit like that becuase i don't want to run 10 and find my car a month down the track stuffing up.
Cheers
Rick.

I personally would still decomp it, but you wont have any probs you just wont be able to put as much timing in it(=less power especially low and mid range)
they rekon up to 12psi without decomp up to 18psi with. This is all well and good but at 12 psi from my limited experience you will b almost at TDC at full boost. this means you rnt running any timing at all!!!!!!
I was very sceptical on decomp my motor. once i did it i will never look back. Makes it ballsy. I could put 13 deg of timing straight in after doing it.
I dont know if u r a mechanic (im not) but it is not that hard. Ive done everything to mine my self aside from tuning.

I'm only 18 and this is my first car was going to make it my 2nd but choose to keep it because it's just as good as new cars maybe better
Is timming all that imporatant don't get me wrong if it's to high bang there goes the engine but what i mean this may be different once i starting running boost not sure..
But when i back my timming from say 15 to 10 running on lpg i feel mo difference at all well not enough to say jee that good or bad.
I hope it makes more of a difference when tunning a turbo becuase i don't want to buy this MSD thing and find that running my car a little bit more retard would have made no difference.
Cheers
Rick.
Also i think i'll pick up my converter and t/b this weekend

Well i picked up the boost timming master last weekend and looks good and simple to use.
I have a few queations though can i modify the length of the wires there only like 70cm long and i need to mount under the dash and there not longer enough unless i mount it next to the coil.
What do you guys think i'll get a pic up this arvo and show you what i mean.
cheers
Rick.
