Tube doors

Post by sanger »

Mucked around today fabbing up some tube doors. I used 20NB or 1inch OD Med pipe. I will be using toyota corrolla AE82 door lock mechanisms so that there will be no rattles :D .

Still got some holes to drill and finishing welds but not that much more to do.

This is what they look like.

Let me know what you think.

Cheers Sanger...

Thanks waxhead. I know what you mean. Im drivng some wicked tracks massive wombat holes and some good rock tracks so i thought id protect myself in case of a flop.

Make some they only cost me $50 in material. Cheap insurance if u ask me.

No worries waxhead.. I'll take some pics tomoz when they are done. It would be best if you cut the hinge as they do in the US. This would allow for easier attachment rather than using the stock hinge.

Ok here are some of the details pics.
First this is how they are mounted to the hinges. Could of done this better but got over it. It serves it function.

The next 2 pics are how i attatched corrolla lock mechanisms to keep my door closed. There are no rattles either which is a bonus

The best thing bout these tube doors is that they cost me $50 in total.

Look great, don't wish to shower on your parade but....
They are probally illegal
Doors must comply with an ADR for side impact.
Running no doors means not compliance required, obviously
But your doors will probally be considered to be just that, doors, and thus must comply with the relevant ADRs eg side impact, door latching ect

Like I said but great work they look hot

Not really too concerned about it as they will only be used to and from wheeling trips which are fairly close to where i live.
But thanks for the heads up.

When I get my Drook sorted we will have to DO a run so I can have a better look

What a lot of hot rod guys do is take the intrusion plate out of XD-XF Falcons and weld the in to ensure compliance
If you weld this plate, or similar, inbetween the the bottom and mid rail you should not have a prob

Should make removable hinge pins to make swapping easier

Thanks again for input. I will revise my design later on but for now they will do me fine. Draw a microsoft paint design that you think would be best (modify my original design)

and one last side on pic of the tube doors painted.

They worked a treat on the weekend. Had plenty of visibility and felt protected on side angles. Very happy with how they turned out.

This has been discussed before but all leaf sprung suzi's do not have side intrusion bars fitted and do not comply with that ADR, which is one reason we can run without doors and another why tube doors can be legal. In saying that the door must be fitted with an Anti-burst catch and be able to be opened from both sides.

As an OME latch has been fitted you are fine as far as the anti-burst goes, only question is how do you open it, have you fabbed a lever and if so can it be easily reached from outside. Might want to paint it yellow just to indicate it.

Thanks for the info just cruzin'. I have to weld a washer or a piece of flat bar to the latch to make it easier to open. And yes it can be easily reached from outside the vehicle.

1. Was your zook originally a 4 seater? if so you need an authorised person to approve it as a now two seater.

2. You have changed the body structure and body mounting so you need approval for this as well.

Please don't confuse an engineer with an authorised person. In Qld you don't have to be an engineer to approve most common mods, just have 10 years experience with-in the automotive feild and pass Qld Transport requirements.

As for the ADR's, zooks may or may not be classed as utilities, I'm not sure, for lack of any better description.

just make sure you reattach the two side mirrors as these need to be in place to be legal
