Will get Eugene to answer u later... cos I know nothing!MD4x4 wrote:After a basic easy to operate GPS for these type of events.
What would you recommend?
MD
But I can tell u he started out at our 1st OBC in 2000 with a handheld bushwalking unit!!! which we used for a number of years.....(Cinderella budget)
is now using a Magellan Meridian (which he coupled with a laptop we already had) this yr. and installed DISCOVER OZ program available from GPSOZ...... a bit large a set up....but if you have a laptop already somewhat cheaper than the big screen units used now.

Exo Darren if you come up and camp out on Sat., there'll be people who will be happy to help you with any questions and how it all works.
Being a practice exercise you'll be able to find as many or as few as you wish, it really is to help anyone interested to have a go....
Also a good idea to have a driver if you want to operate the gps.....as it's real hard to go it alone.
The main thing is to have fun too and not take it too seriously.

Hi Darren,
The Stockton exercise is based on enetering co-ordinates in UTM or lat/long info., Eugene will supply, into your GPS and then you working out your own route to go and find them.
No maps are involved, tho we will prob discuss maps with people around the fire on Sat nite to help those who want an idea of how they are used in conjunction with gps's, in some events.
Our exercises are not an Event , it's not timed & we don't expect anyone to race.....it's at your own safe pace, and purely a practice exercise to help those interested to have an opportunity to have a go and gain some confidence at using their gps unit.
Practice makes perfect, as they say!
And we offer anyone interested to come along and have a go....it's open to all who have a suitable 4x4 for sand driving and a gps unit.
The whole idea of us running these practice exercises, is to support Rudi's NavRuns.....by encouragong peoples to then be interested in giving one of Rudi's Navruns (competitions) a go.....the local one being the Nick Mannell Motors sponsored Sunny Corner Navrun, 3/4th March 07.
Followed by the 4wdMonthly Cliffhanger Navrun in July.
Any further questions, feel free to ask!
Cheers,
Eugene & Celia

Hey Joel,TurboRA28 wrote:Hey sorry to jump in on this thread.. But heading to stockton this saturday night to camp.. Are the GPS co. earlier in this thread for the campsite a good one?
Thanks
Joel
It's on the otherside of pond on the way in .... to the beachfront...not v. private (so people can find us) but v. sheltered from the wind and nice setting. I know the Toyota Club camped further to the south around the corner from us....further in/private.
Enjoy,
Cheers,
Celia
