30 spline axles in a Rover ARB?

Post by RUFF »

Anyone looked at Broaching the side gears to 30 spline or replacing them in an ARB in a 24 spline rover centre? Is either possible?

Ruff,
Only people to speak to about this is McNamara Diffs. I have one of their lockers with 30 spline axles in the back of my 90. Mind you to fit the axles in, you do have to bore out the stub axles.

Yeah thanks Craig. I have delt with Jeff a fair bit.

What this guy has is a range rover with Toyota CV conversion allready done. But is still running Rangie Centres(Pegged) and ARB lockers. He is currently running Macnamara axles and 27spline Chromoly Longfield CVs. But the problem is its going to break inner axles now. So he is looking to go with the 30 spline Longs and get Bobby Long to make a set of inner axles to suit. Although at this point it will prob break centres anyway. He prob realy should have bought a Nissan :D

Major spline diameter of rover 24 spline is about 31.5mm

Minor diameter of a 30 spline toyota side gear is about 31.1mm

So even if you could broach 24 - 30 spline you probably wouldn't be able to get full depth splines in some areas. 10-30 spline would be easy though...

Sorry to disappoint you mate. I don't suppose a toyota ARB side gear is at all similar to a rover one???

i think Maxi-drive make a 30 spline axle for the US market as they use ARB's with different side gears.

but they would be a 23 spline other end for rover cv.

hey tony i have 4 30/30 spline longfields for sale brand new never used.

cheers serg

The Full Toy conversion with 30 splines still the best for the rover axles. I'm using detroit rear locker and ARb front with KAM 4.75 never broke nothing with my maxxis 35" but for 2007 i wanna start my full toy conversion.
Longfield 30 splines axles from a Manufacture friend with 30 splines and R&P from yukon think this is the best... i wanna start doing somme competition with my v8 and buy a set of 37" tires.

better than that just the salys/dana 60 conversion

Even strong than the OEM the rovers R&P will fail soon :( so start thinking on it.

Cheers from Portugal :)

ashcroft CV's and shafts
no one has broken any yet.
5yr warranty
I have a set of CV's sitting here waiting to be brought back to Aus in the new year.
from another thread elsewhere:

I run Maxi Drive shafts and Ashcroft CVs only on 35's granted but no issues whatsoever since fitting the new CVs,
full lock ARBs in and stood on its nose reversing in a 90 weighing in at 2100KG(4600lbs approx)
previously wiped out the Standard AEU2522s with ease.

that and a lifetime guarantee which never hurts ;)
so side gears is what they're after...

The spines in this case are side fit and have clearance between root of shaft splines and tip of sidegear splines, so I would not be concerned by extra 0.2mm clearance of some teeth.

The side gear would still be machined to the standard id to guide the broach.

I don't know how hilux arb side gears compare to the rover ones, but it would be worth checking. I would expect advantages to arb to rationalise the range of side/pinion gears that they have cut.

The front diff in my rangie has modified 80 series rear side gears in a nissan front arb (to use 80 series inner axles and cv's). Some machining of the journal/boss of the side gears was required.

30 spline

Post by quaddrive »

Hi,
I used to work for ARB in the workshop. I used to speak to the technical guys a lot re. odd fitments. There was an RD76 avail for a 30 spline rover diff and from memory a toy side gear could be used, but dont quote me on that one.
ARB melbourne can prolly help with queeries, but I know that I myself fitted an RD76 with custom 30 spline shafts to a RR.
I even think the smiths ran this setup in the rear of their blue RR one year in Outback Challenge as ARB was looking to produce this as an off the shelf upgrade..... dont know what happened though.

Cheers
Giles
