hj60 losing power randomly
Ok so ive recently had a full reco exchange engine put in.
Full rebuild, head, rebore, new pistons etc, injectors overhauled, crank grind, etc etc. Diesel pump was not done.
It has started to (about 2 months after rebuild) lose power randomly for any period between 1 second and up to 10 seconds where powercomes back on and all is good. It also feels wierd during acceleration sometimes, like its missing a bit etc.
It tends to do it more often when tank is low (anywhere under 1/4), it does it more often after a long trip, ie after scooting along freeway at 100km/h for half an hour, it will do it frequently as i accelerate from lights etc.
It also blows alot more smoke than my old engine did. Old engine only blew smoke at about 2500RPM and even then not uch. This engine seems to blow it under hard acceleration, and winding the fuel setting back doesnt seem to correct this.
What i have done so far,
Changed cartridge fuel filter,
Cleaned primary filter at inlet to lift pump, (was 100% clean)
Cleaned fuel tank & pickup, pickup was 100% clean and no gunk came out of tank,
Changed all flexible fuel lines, new hose clips all round, (some lines were cracked but didnt look like they would be leaking.
Bypassed water seperator/sensor.
I have spoken to the rebuilder who suggested a few things such as tank pickup, and water seperator, and I am about to take it back to the engine rebuilder and tell him to fiux it. I just want to make sure its nothing trivial first.
It seems like a fuel starvation issue, and since im pretty sure ive eliminated the fuel system up to the lift pump, im wondering wether it could be the lift pump itself, or its more likely to be the injection pump, or perhaps simply an injection timing problem???
its really very annoying when you go to take off at the head of the queue at the lights, put your foot down and you go nowehere for 10 seconds. !

The lacking power thing and blowing smoke could be a pump issue shaddow. I'd be taking it back ASAP and getting it looked at. If you pump is doing nasties to the mixture then you'll void any warranty on the engine.

It also sounds like you are getting air in the system. Have you replaced the seals in the primer pump? My pump was leaking and when my fuel tank got low, it was easier for it to suck air in from around the dodgy seals than fuel from the tank, which causes a missfire/lack of power until the air bubbles disappear. It was most prevalent off road on a steep hill.

When the edic motor or relay packs it in it usually either turn the motor off fully or won't turn off at all. I would try taking the covers off the back of the injector pump as they have a tendancy of condensing oil vapour and filling with oil which will affect the operation of the diaphram which controls fuel. Not a guaranteed fix but could be part of the prob.Shadow wrote:Dont hear any relay clicks, but i might try disconnecting the edic after start and see if the problem still occurs.
Another suggestion is next time it happens, stop the car while the problem is still occuring and bleed the fuel filter to determine there is air getting in the fuel problem or not.
You should have pressure on the primer when you loosten the bleeder, and you need to catch it in something *squirt* if it is a bit of water. I have a spare fuel controller relay in Brisbane if you feel the need to try another, i'd check the connections to/from that considering you had the engine out recently.
