4.5 80 using oil

Post by Monty »

i have a 95 model 80 series with the 4.5 petrol

it seems to be using a bit of oil about 1 litre per 3000 k's and the oil light will come on for about 30 seconds to a minute in the mornings when its first started.

it doesnt appear to have any leaks

Just wondering if anyone else has had their 80 using oil and what the problem was?

cheers Angus

check your tappet cover PCV valve...if they stick open, they suck in the oil.
The light is the low level alarm.....have u changed thicknesses of oil???
check the plugs for signs of burning oil...
check the tappet cover whilst going for fumes...

Good advice. I believe he is running Castrol Magnatec, which is what I run (with no oil consumption issues).

Angus, have you done a full service since you bought the car? Not just oil changes?

There are a whole host of engine additives you can try before you start rebuilding the motor.

And are you sure you are only using 1L per 3000km's? That really doesnt seem like a lot of oil consumption seeing as though your low oil level light is coming on. 1L out of 7L is not a great deal to miss.

Mine was using alot of oil, when I drove to tough truck a couple of years ago from Melb I used 2 lt each way. The valves were so far out of adjustment I needed a head rebuild(cost about 2k) most valve buckets were f**ked
