Help needed with lift on a GQ
I have a 1990 SWB Maverick auto 4.2 litre petrol and want to raise it. I ordered some King springs measuring 5" and they just came in, what other parts do I need to complete the lift properly? I have already purchased ToughDog adjustable panhards front and back, Castor plates, Transmission spacers and extended brake lines from BBM. I have offset rims sitting in my spare room ready for bigger tires later down the track - 33"-35"?
Do I need double cardinal joints for the front and rear tail shafts? Plus I've been told I'll also need adjustable lower arms for the rear diff which cost about $350 pair. Dare I ask what else I need?? This rate its gonna cost as much to raise a GQ as it would a TJ Jeep!!

Adjustable upper arms worked better for me because it keeps the wheel more centralised when at full compression. But get your lower arms strengthened anyway, have seen way too many people snap lower arms then diff rotates and there goes ya pinion as well. Apart from that all the gear you mentioned should keep ya out of trouble. Shouldn't need to go double cardin, just keep the grease up to your uni's and slip joint
Thanks Josh_GQ, should I buy the lower arms or get them strengthened? How do you do that or who does it? I've seen people weld pieces of angle to them or sleeve them, which is better? Some get lucky bogged. mine only had a slight vibration if i didn't grease the shaft every month or so. I didn't have gearbox packers either.bogged wrote:be prepared for viabrations with 5in on a shorty.
Can't help ya too much on what to do with the lowers, i just got new ones $300 pair. have seen people weld bits of angle some seem to work allright but have seen these bend, just depends how well you do it i suppose.
i can do you a double cardan shaft for $750 brand new you will need it for 5 inch lift as well as spacers 12mm thick you can get away with the front shaft as you dont use it for hi speed driving.get a set of 3rds rear arms fixed lowers adjustable uppers set the pinion so that it is in line with the shaft and with the double cardan it will drive perfect

i agree with mudmav and rvh96. i have a 6in in my shorty.....the double cardin was the last thing i did (ended up needing it). bought fixed lowers and adj. uppers and must say the vehicle drives very well. the only vibrations i get is the claws when i come to a stop. if budget is a problem you can strengthen the factory lowers...but they are VERY weak. i put superior lower arms in and they would be 1.5 as thick and twice as heavy easily. expect to pay approx $300 for lower arms.
josh_gq is right. if one should bend too much or break you can do some serious damage.
my dbl cardin was $450 completely rebuilt. i was sceptacle (spelling?) of a rebuilt one.....but the only original parts was the casing, all new unis and the driveshaft mob even let me watch their handy work. no complaints.

I'd go with strengthen (and longer) lowers and adjustable uppers. My lower arms are 50x25 box and you can jack the truck from them if you want.
93 Nissan Pathfinder / Terrano Turboed VH45, GQ Trans and T-case, coil overs, hydraulic winch and fair bit of other stuff. (Currently a pile of parts in the workshop)
