Hi there,

I have recently purchased a 1990 GQ Patrol and am now looking at
getting it turbo'd. I have looked at many kits, Denco, Safari, ATX, MTQ
(DTS) and the more I read the more confused im getting. Could I please
have some feedback as to what people think/recommend for my 4x4, why,
and what kinda price range I ahould be looking at. Thanks in advance.

I recently had a spin in Kris Richters GQ LWB comp truck at Cliffhanger, it had a TD42, stock as a rock motor and pump and a MTQ kit with high flowed turbo, man did it pull, once it came on boost for a stock motor I was really amazed how hard it went. Don't quote me, but I think from memory that particular set up is around the $4k mark. You can get cheaper kits but if you're gonna spend $3.5k you might as well spend another $500ish and get the shit hot set up I want that kit but I'm hesitant as mine has 500,000+ kays on the clock and I don't know how it would handle it.

Good luck with it you've got heaps of choices!

ive just had an MTQ fitted to my TD42, i get it back tomorow all things going well so i will let you know then................... :D

powerglide turbo kit does well it uses a garret turbo made for the td42's supplyed and installed for around 4,100 and produced 97rwkw@ 12psi non turboed it was 51.5rwkw

i know a great place in melbourne that chould help you out

Had a Denco kit with my GQ and it was great once it was setup properly... thats the key to any kit... having it setup properly.

I'd go Denco again even if it was just for their after sales service.
My mate just got a MTQ kit for his low km GU and he says its not impressive. Its only just been fitted on the weekend. What else should he do now to gettin it to work.

depends on what was done when fitted.

Pay the $ take it to a proper diesel place that knows what the kcuf they are doing, it will be worth it.

97kw is far from good for 12 psi on a new turbo
mine makes more than that with a stuffed turbo thats done 340000kms

tell him to get it tuned by someone who knos diesels

if i was to buy a kit from scratch id go denco as i havealot of mates with alot of different kits. the denco is the best finished, best after sales service. and every denco kit ive seen hauls

97rwkw SAFELY im sure you can run more without a doubt but with no other work beside a bolt on turbo i would not ask much more

and of course 97rwkw where off the wheels .....35pedes where ran on not 31 roadies

as far as the someone that knows diesels i laugh

this was a simple bolt on turbo without much tuning and no pyrometer being used

I agree.Get it tuned properly. I just finished fitting a MTQ kit to a customers GQ. Made 88.5kw on a mild tune.

If the vehicle had an android placed on the fuel pump , a 3 inch mandrel exhaust, safari snorkle opened through to the filter,reconditioned injectors and tuned by a pro what would be the norm in boost and kw be.

What power is to be expected and where should the boost be .

generally about 110rwkw as there wont be enough fuel being delivered to the pump.

Yes i helped him fit it. He has taken it somewhere today to get it looked at. Hope it comes up allright.

Got my nissan trials dvd today, watchin it now, looks good.

Yep I'd agree, I wasn't that impressed with the MTQ set up. Look it went quite good, but nothing comapred to a ball bearing turbo set up, no comparison. We did a ute with a ball bearing turbo and bloody hell it hammers, fastest diesel I have driven by far. Probably about to pruchase another gq wagon(i know the history of it so yes I'll have a toyota and a nissan) and I will be chaning the turbo to a ball bearing set up. No lag and power off the mark. Just can't compare IMO

IMO Hell yeah. Not sure if you have driven one with a ball bearing set up, but it's like going from a N/A TD42 to a turbo version, can't go back. Considering the ute ran only 8 psi boost and it had no lag and just reved out easily and hard. Just so responsive. After I drove my turboed maverick it just wasn't a comparison, considering I was running 15 psi.

For the most, a standard kit will do most people (was good for me until I drove the ute), but if you want better, you can't beat ball bearing. Am I going overboard by replacing a safari turbo just for the sake of a ball bearing turbo..............maybe but as I said, once you have driven one couldn't go back. I'll probably get it hi-flowed as well.

Thats a great increase, nearly twice the power!!. Dont let ppl put u down by saying theirs has 120kw at the wheels and so on. All that matters is the b4 and after figures!!!


Hey bogged if your engine is stock how did they come up with such high torque figures??? I'm guessing they put teh wrong data in the dyno!!! (not that it matters)

Sorry, I misunderstood what you said, yes I believe we are talking the same. No I do not believe that a Safari/Denco kit is in the same class as a ball bearing turbo.

it is stock with 285 MTRs, no engine work, thats just how it ran, it was actually a speedo run, and asked while it was on the dyno to do a power run...

They all do ball bearing turbo kits, you just have to pay a little more for that turbo. Generally the base kit is not a BB turbo.
