GU 2.8 Crankshaft Pulley
GU 2.8 Crankshaft Pulley
Left the shopping centre at the Gold Coast today and got onto highway and notices battery light and sub-tank light (wtf) was on then looked across to temperature gauge to notice it was sitting on the H so immediately took the next exit, stopped opened the bonnet and noticed no belts were turning due to the Crankshaft pulley rattling and wobbling so quickly turned off engine (which was running fine), called RACQ and got a tolt tray to take me home to North Brisbane.
$440 later I called a mate who has same model an dhe said the he had the same problem with the Crankshaft Pulley going but is resulted it chewing out the key in the crank thus requiring a new crank and assembly costing $4000.
Has anyone else had this happen and what they have done? If I'm up for 4 grand would I best getting an entire engine, and if so what engine?
P.S. I will now check the bible for this issue.

Re: GU 2.8 Crankshaft Pulley
That is just f******g unbelievable. Why do MOST patrol engines have such major issues???HARMZ wrote: $440 later I called a mate who has same model an dhe said the he had the same problem with the Crankshaft Pulley going but is resulted it chewing out the key in the crank thus requiring a new crank and assembly costing $4000.

Dont expect mere proof to sway my opinion.
its actually a COMMAN fault to most deisels.
IF the end of the crank and key way isn't to badded damaged you can cold weld it onto the crank. be aware you will never get the pulley off so you may have to cut any timing belt covers etc so they fit around the shaft. also if the pully/harmonic balancer fails later on you will have to replace the crank and pulley.
if its not to badly damaged you can get away with loctiting it on. don't worry you can still get it off later on if need be.
just thank goodness its not a mitisi. local mechanic had one where the pulley came right off (due to the piddly litle 10mm lip which is all that holds it) and did some nasty damage (raditor, fan, pump, bit of panel damge!)

Still yet not the wiser on the exact problem as local mechanic will not take on job as too big of a job, local Nissan Dealer busy but will be towed there tomorrow but most likely will not be getting back until the New Year, bye bye fourbying on holdidays
Is the Harmonic Balancer on the 2.8 a two part? If so here's hoping it's only the rubber between the two parts thats gone.
Another question, why on earth did my Sub-Tank light come on?

Sorry to tell you but it's a one piece ballancerHARMZ wrote:Still yet not the wiser on the exact problem as local mechanic will not take on job as too big of a job, local Nissan Dealer busy but will be towed there tomorrow but most likely will not be getting back until the New Year, bye bye fourbying on holdidays![]()

yep not happy i bet why dont you do what im about to do fling the shit 2.8 my bugger is spewin water out the overflow bottle yes fling the thing and slip in a 4.2 . I for one wont be spending any money on 2.8 The conversion is not that hard mostly just a bolt in jobby ???????/
THE SMOKER YOU DRINK THE DANCER YOU GET
The only difference i can see is the Pistons, might be wrong. They also run a different front cover so they can mount the pump. One of the other blokes at work worked at Holden & reckons they look like the same aswell.Barnsey wrote:A petrol engine the same as a 2.8 diesel?TUFF MAV wrote:I,m not sure but you could check if the 2.8 crank is the same as the RB30 crank in the VL & Skyline. Bottom end & block look the same in both. Maybe ask an engine shop.

Re: yep
That would probably be the easiest option if was to upgrade i think, still judging options, anyone know exactly what would be involved for this? ie, engine mounts, gearbox, computers?stormpatrol wrote:yep not happy i bet why dont you do what im about to do fling the shit 2.8 my bugger is spewin water out the overflow bottle yes fling the thing and slip in a 4.2 . Re: yep
we are doing this as we speak, the newer 4.2L engines, have 4 bolt engine mounts, and the 2.8 has 2 bolt engine mounts, you can use the 2 bolt mounts, but you have to change the brackets that bolt to the engine, as 4 bolt mounts have a retainer, or you could cut the brackets off the chassis and make new ones,HARMZ wrote:That would probably be the easiest option if was to upgrade i think, still judging options, anyone know exactly what would be involved for this? ie, engine mounts, gearbox, computers?stormpatrol wrote:yep not happy i bet why dont you do what im about to do fling the shit 2.8 my bugger is spewin water out the overflow bottle yes fling the thing and slip in a 4.2 . i have a complete 4.2 loom here, and i will be tryin to work a way in to meshing the 2 together and also removeing the fly by wire accelerator and computer wiriing, and swappin in the 4.2 wiring, im hoping that i dint have to cut, splice and join intot the wiring as we wanna keep it reliable,
we pulled the 2.8 and box out today, we are waiting on a couple of bits and pieces, but we hope to slot the 4.2 back in asap, so we can see if it all lines up, at this stage things are looking good,
Went to Nissan today, checked out the crankshaft and indeed the keyway on the crankshaft and pulley/balancer had been flogged out, so gave Nissan to go ahead and repair the crankshaft.
Thought about upgrading to a 3 litre after hearing about Nissans deal for the entire engine but found out today that they're all sold out, supposedly only had 200 of them.
However seeing I was prepared to spend some more money than required will invest in a performance module.
