Can anyone tell me the issues with removing front and rear sway bars from my GQ for better off road use. i have raised my GQ 2.5" all round and i have been told that removing the sway bars will give me better off road travel. Am i going to stuff up my 4x4 for normal on road use.
If its not a Maverick then go home
it will depend on how soft or hard your springs are how firm the shockies are etc generally the softer the springs and shocks the more body roll you will get i removed them on mine and it was fine but when i put new springs on i noticed more bodyroll so i put the rear back on but not the front and all is good now
your best bet is to disconnect them and go for a drive and see another option is to get swaybar dissconects but can be pricey

You can buy aftermarket swaybar disconnects or extended swaybar links... both will improve your onroad travel without compromising offroad too much.
As I have REALLY soft springs I'll probably go back to having both on - with a disconnect on each end. Currently I'm only running disconnects at the front.
Legally and for insurance purposes running no sway bars is pretty iffy.

I had a 88 shorty and it never had a front on it as far as i can see. I left the rear swaybar on as it was only a 2in lift without long travel shockies theres no point getting rid of your swaybars as they probably wont be inhibiting your travel anyway. Have a look at the angle of the swaybar where it connects to the uprights, if it is flat that is good, if it points upwards get a modified set of uprights made longer so the swaybar sits flat again. That will help on road performance and off road travel.

Removing factory sway bars is naughty because its against the law but its good to do for offroad because as said it will flex more, flex faster and easier.
But reconnect them before you hit the road again, especially the rear one cos the rear axle flexes way more easily than the front.

i,ve just removed my front one and have noticed no real difference at all,however i've also just put new springs and shocks in so evrything rides nice(even at 130kms)
