1600 converstion-neeed starter motor help
hi,
i have put my new 1600 8 valve into my sierra..
i have a 1.3 starter motor and in order for it to fit i need to file lots and lots off the block and shit... i dont wanna do that.. is there any way to get around it.. and use the 1.3... or will i have to use a 1.6 starter motor..
if so where can i get a second hand starter from... im in melbourne, any numbers would be great.
another thing is, how much would a 1.6 2nd hand starter be....
Dan!

starter help
g'day mate i put the 1.6 8v in my 89 sierra, the 1.6 and 1.3 starter is the same unit unless you get a high torque one which is really long and narrow and bolts straight in. I took to the back of the starter housing with the 4inch grinder and ground a fair bit out, never cracked or played up at all, i had a spare one so i could do a change over cause mine played up a fair bit as it was always in mud. So if you grind the housing back it should bolt in nicely.

starter woes
Yeah grind a fair bit until you have a straight surface. You will need to take a bit off. I started off using my adpator spacer plate but then it was giving me trouble so i took it out and never touched the starter again!

nicbeer, What part of the kit fixed the starter motor problem?
My mate is having problems with his starter motor (the starter motor is band new that the shop has fitted), the so called mechanic up here has no idea how to fix it, says its the "ring gear?" any way its just sitting in the shop waiting for a miracle I guess.

Sorry did not see this.
Not sure, i believe it is where the mating surface is and how it fits in. I have one of BenTs adapter rings and it seems to work ok. I have fired the starter direct of a batt and no grinding when turning.
Whats yours doing? grinding or noise when starting or ?

The old one he had in would start then you would hear the grinding. The one in now doesn’t even start the motor, apparently it’s missing the flywheel all together. He says the one in now has a long nose, the old one had a short one, both are 1.3 starters.
The Zook I want to buy has the 1.6 in it and grinds when it starts as well.

Weird.
I used the 1.6 one in mine.
Must be going past the flywheel when throwing out the cog. Have u tried an adapter/spacer in there to space it out or does it need to be in more?
