Steering Damper Relocation

Post by James Brittain »

Hi Guys,

Anyone know of a good steering damper relocation kit for a discovery series 1? I want to move the damper from its current position and put it up in front of the axle like on a defender. I know that i will have to buy a new damper but i just can't find any good kits.

Anyone got any pics?

Cheers,

James.

Maxidrive make a bracket that bolts onto the steering arm whereever the hell you want to put it - think its about $60 from memory? The thing is I think they may only fit on the thicker maxidrive arms, but there is no reason you can't weld a little sleeve on to your current arm (or sleeve the whole thing!!). Then you just need to weld a bracket to the chassis, same as a defender one (or you could bolt it on, if you can be bothered making that complex a bracket)

or buy the original defender arm that goes on the track rod, a defender dampner, and make a bracket out of flat steel and bolt it to the chassis.
Defender arm should be no more than $25 from a wrecker.

easy to make - as said bit of flat bar, say 10mm thick by say 30mm, mathc, drill and bolt up to existing bolts thru chassis, leave hanging say 40mm below - will need longer bolts to replace those thru chassis. Other end is just a bit of say 40x40mm angle cut to right length, drilled to take 2 sized u bolts one side fitted over track rod, and one hole to take the dampner end on the lower side.
Nice gq swb ute chop with a huffer for the good times

Discowhite on AULRO makes just such a kit and I have one. It is very well done. Jump on there and send him a PM and he'll give you the details.

Hi guys, thanks for the replies.

Does anyone know if i can fit the defender type drag link bracket that has the steering damper mount on it to a 97 discovery steering box drop arm?

I see D110V8D has done it in the pic and thats what i would like to do instead of ataching the damper to a slide on braket on the draglink.

However, my steering box drop arm is straight, not swan-necked like D110V8D and so i dont know if the defender braket will fit and be a straight swap? And if it does if it will all be misaligned to mount the steering damper?

Any help would be great.

Cheers,

James.
