love to do some of these mods myself to my middy
I would think that in this order:
A) points 1 and 2 together because you don't want to have to cut and rotate 2 set of axles, and probably points 6 & 7 at same time. oh and point 8.
B) bigger engine point 6
C) bigger tyres point 3. will have the power to spin them and strength to not bust things (would have thought 40 series stuff pretty strong anyway)
D) roll cage in between times
Bluey
i guess it will come down to what is current spec of the vehicle, where and what type of tracks you want to do, size of your wallet and your own skills/facilities to do some/all of the work

Chances of fitting 35's or 36's with out suspension and cab mods are slim to none. Go with a 4" spring lift and 2" cab lift first so you can get your tyres under.
HZJ75, 3in spring,2in cab,drop shackles,shock hoops and inverted shocks, fourbys 15x10 beadlocks, 36x12.5x15 simex ET2,
Comp Tray,Turboed 1HZ.
HZJ105R, 4in Tough dog, 315 75 16 MTZ, Turbo 1HZ.

HZJ105R, 4in Tough dog, 315 75 16 MTZ, Turbo 1HZ.
Spring over = Roll over...
But each to there own.
I agree with the comment that you'll struggle to get 36's on it successfully without lift.
My advice is if your serious about all these mods then do it once and do it well. both diffs out. Extend your wheel base and drive shaft. Do the 60 diffs and SOA. This way you can do all the work to compliment each other. then once your diffs and wheel base are right look at some 36's.
once you get sick of the lack of grunt with 36's then do you 308. After that some lockers and lower diff ratios to keep you low range low. when your done there you'll scare yourself enough to need a roll cage. Then while the cage is going in you may aswell spruce up the interior. once the interiors schmick you'll need some nice paint on the outside to match. that should keep you busy and broke for the fist five years.

This doesn't always work... The V8 in the Middy only fits properly because there is a body lift there.... long story.UZJ40 wrote:Do the engine and then start at the bottom and work up, ie the suspension after the engine
The good bit is that you're planning the whole lot from the start. It may turn out best to drive it stock for a while, save up a heap of $$$ then go nuts and do the engine and the susp / power steer all together as one big job. That way, u only need to engineer once too.

Go nuts!!!

i knew i would never fit 35's or 36's under it stock coz i have got 31's on it now and they rub at full flex! so it sounds like i should do the mods in order:
1. SOA and 60 series diffs
2. extend wheelbase and lengthen tail shaft
3. power steering and tires
4. 308
5. roll cage!
i think thats the order ill do it in!
thanks mitch

i have similar plasn to you for my fj40. my rego runs out in feb and i am thinking in the 3month period i have before i need a rwc i am going to buy a 60 and put diffs steering and suspension in it all in one go. prob cheaper for you to do SOA with diff swap and powersteer at once if you can find a rusted out 60. sounds like it should be a beast though

ps go with chev! holden V8's suck balls and have no low down. 350 chev is what you want. there is no substitute for cubes
i would have thought a roll cage would be 1st on your list or at least a roll bar if u intend on driving it,
and holden 308's are ok mine goes hard and is cheap to get parts for.

Keep in the back of your head things like the tailshaft may have to be lengthened or shortened with the engine conv. (Mine did... don't know about the 40ser)

if it was me personally, i would look in to the toyota diesel engines for a engine conversion, a 13bt or even a 15bt would be what i would look at.
Imo i couldnt handle having the 308 or something petrol after the reliablitly and the fuel economy of the toyota diesel, And yes i have access to 308's and 253 (theres one in my shed)

rollcage and recovery points then wheel it as often as you can
you'll soon see where you want the mods... powersteering is probably high on the list, but you can live without it. the rest depends on how you like your rigs set up. i thought i was going to SOA mine when i first bought it, but after lifting it 2 inches, i decided i HATE the fact it loves to go to sleep so often, so it's gone back down to stock height and i'm running q78's with cut guards.
