I have a rolling rangie chassis left over from a car I wrecked for parts.
I was thinking of using the rear part of the chassis as the basis for an offroad trailer.
Cut off 50mm of the bottom of the diff housing, weld on some plate, fit a
cover plate where diff centre would go.
Make an A frame to tie into the chassis rails, and use all the original body mounting points and more to attach a 6x4 type body to.
The chassis will take most of the grunt and the body will just have to resist a bit of twist.
I have searched and not found anyone using complete car chassis suspension, am I heading down the wrong path.

If your only after a 6x4 and look hard enough you should be able to find a cheap enough box trailer already built. I got a 6x4 for $100 unregistered, just have to finish giving it a new coat of paint, then get it registered. No rust holes or any damage.
It was already sprung over axle, with 6 stud hubs aswell. It's also very high for a box trailer. The floor sits a few inches higher then the top of the 16" rim i have on it.

Im actually considering the same idea twice with a couple of spare Rocky chassis I have. One each for 2 daughters who will both end up with Rockys for their first cars. Best part about it is the fact I can mount an original fuel tank in original position effectively doubling their range. I plan to use original springs and shocks, but a straight trailer axle and same track and wheels.

I want the trailer to use on extended outback trips, with the family onbord ther is not enough room for everything , fuel, water, spares, tools etc etc.
We dont take alot of stuff but the back of a disco isn't that big.
It would also serve as a home trailer.
At a later stage i will look at putting a removable camper top on it
I cant justify spending 4-10k on a good used camper trailer and have it sit around for most of the year.
The diff shave was just to get a bit more clearance, seeing as it is an unpowered axle.

I know a guy who used a rear rangie chassis as the basis of a boat trailer frame. He did what you're thinking with the diff and left the A frame and suspension in its normal positon. He used to tow it to Weipa over very rough roads and reckoned the boat rode very well.
I wouldnt bother doing it with a leaf chassis as you're not achieving much over buying a normal box trailer but Rangie chassis can be had for next to nothing these days. Make up a rear crossmember of sorts and some mounts and use a LWB Series tub as the trailer body. Or buy a front damaged 110 chassis and a Series tub will bolt straight on = coil sprung off road trailer with aluminum tub. Tare weight would be about 300 - 350kg. Could also put a water tank where the fuel tank was.
If you already have a Rover, track will be the same and you can share spare wheels as well.
