GQ Diesel Pump Leak, Help Needed.

Post by henry »

Can anyone identify the fitting opposite the banjo fitting on the diesel pump. When the car is running diesel is pissing out. Can this be repaired easily, does an o-ring seal it? Can i pull the fitting out without screwing anything up? Its out of a 88 GQ Patrol.

i think you will find that its coming from the top cover plate and running down common problem the o ring seal on cover plate can be replaced without taking the pump of

I also had a leak. I opted for pulling the pump and having all seals replaced. I just didn't want to risk the seal on the IP drive shaft going and pumping diesel into my crank case oil. Seals tend to go near to the same time.

I just had min rebuilt by Cooma Diesel. It cost me $2k fitted. I was told TD42 pump rebuilds can be between 1 and 3k.

Cheers

Service fuel pump, replace throttle shaft, top cover, headplug rollers, drive shaft, gaskets, seals & recalibrate pump.

I hoped it would only be the seals, but I have to trust the judgement of my workshop. I was told tha this is not too unusual of a pump of that vintage ('93 model & 288k).

I Had the same problem on my safari, top cover seal got hard and couldnt handle pressure, cost $15 from the local diesel bloke and about an hour of my time, easiest way to find out where its comin from is to degrease the lot cover it in talc powder start her up and watch

Ok, i bought a seal kit from Diesel Specialists in Wickam, Newcastle, from a real helpful bloke named Craig. I removed the top off the injector pump and replaced the rubber seal that fits into a recessed section of the top housing. In the kit came a throttle shaft o-ring which i replaced and also 2 copper washers for the banjo fitting for your fuel return lines. The only tricky part was when you take top off the pump, undo the throttle shaft out of the top housing otherwise you have to remove the spring which connects your throttle to a lever inside the pump and with both hands taken up holding the cover and removing the spring a little plunger thingy went ping and i never seen it again. Back to Craig for another plunger. I lied about the only tricky part thing, the throttle lever is splined to the shaft and can go on anywhere. I marked it with a white paint marker but was one spline out when i restarted the motor, i knew it was out cause it instantly revved to 2000rpm. I shut it down and removed the lever and put it back on the shaft one spline back and she started and purred like a kitten, well like a gq kitten anyway. So while it was a bit of dicking around it was fun and i enjoy it. You gotta love playing with cars to do it though, if you dont love playing with em, pay someone to do it.
