My 3.0 ltr 6 has been running rough like it's missing a cylinder. Pulled plugs to change and found No: 5 oil fouled all others okay. New cap and rotor as well. No real difference to roughness. Adjusted timing to specs. Anything sound familiar to anyone? 330,000 kms on the clock by the way. Will do compression test this weekend. Could this be a common problem?

Thanks for the reply. There is a theme building here. You are the third different person to say the broken ring thing. Not sounding good for the 3 ltr or my wallet. Any suggestions for good engine shops NE Melb? Or would it be worth looking at a change over reco motor? Suggestions?

Did compression test today. Results if interested are: No. 1: 170 psi, 2: 170, 3: 100, 4: 80, 5: 20 and 6: 170. She's buggered!! Number 3 and 4 came up to 170 with oil down the hole. Probably rings? Best I got out of No. 5 was 30 psi with a snort of oil. Weird thing is, it doesn't burn any oil noticably just really down on power. Not surprising it's really only a 3.5 cylinder. Any recommendations for engine shops NE Melbourne? Or any other reasonable suggestions?
Thanks
Thanks

For what they're worth, I'd be looking pretty hard at going down the second hand Magna engine route. From what I've seen and heard, as long as you get a single cam engine from a Magna, and swap all of the bolt-on parts over (manifolds, AC, P/steer, alt etc.) they bolt straight up and are about a third of the price of a Paj engine.
Try a search on here or over at http://forum.pajeroclub.com.au/forum/ . There was a guy who did the swap last year, bolted up with all the bits swapped over.

Just digging up an old thread here. After looking around at Paj and Magna 3.0l motors I found a decent Paj motor for a reasonable price with 6 month warranty. Even though it was more than a Magna motor there will be less required to fit it. This is important as I don't want the car off the road for too long if possible.
I have changed a couple of motors and gearboxes in other cars so I know the basics but is there anything I should be aware of i fitting this motor to the Paj. If any of you more experienced blokes could shed some light on this I'd appreciate it. For instance, should I fit exhaust manifolds before or after block is in car? Just after advice to make the job a bit smoother.
The trans is an auto by the way.
Thanks in advance.
