trying to get the power steering pump off my 40 and i can't budge the pulley off to get the pump off.. I have removed the nut on the end but there is a 'woodruff key' thats inside that makes it hard to remove..
I dont really want to beat on it and stuff the pulley or pump.

do I need a special puller for this? any tips appreciated.
get yourself a pulley puller it's about $20 from supercheap, you'll never get that thing off without damaging it if it's been on for ages. Make sure you "WD" it before you have a go too. You can't beat having the right too for the right job.

What he said. The woodruff key is just a little semi circle which goes into a slot.
had a look at superheap yesterday arvo but couldn't find anything i could use to do the job.. i then went home and had a look online..
is this the right sort of pulley puller?
All i could see at superheap was the 3 claw type and I wasn't confident that that was the right one.. and i doubt id even be able to fit those claw ones in the space available.
all you need is a plastic/copper or block of wood and tap it out, id try a beat of heat but be careful not to much and just tap it of the p/s puller there wont go on you pulley yours isnt a press fit just a bit of rust holding it on

Screw the nut back on to the end of the thread. Put a good leaver behind the pulley. With a bit of force on the leaver tap the end of the shaft with a copper hammer or a steel hammer with a piece of hard wood against the shaft. The nut will protect the thread from damage.
A three legged puller would be easier but the other way is cheaper if you don't have one.
Soak it in WD40 or a penatrating spray.

it helps heaps! thanks!! i hit it with some WD 40 tonight and gave it a few love taps.. the only problem is getting in there to give it a wack.. i'll give it a go using this method tomorrow night...
