Power steering cooler?
just a bit of help and advice, as i'm sure someone out there can help.
just conecting up my p/steering, my pump sits almost directly over the box. i can easily put a couple of lines in about 300mm long and thats it connected.
but i am sure i need some sort of cooling in it, as the pump will be working fairly hard with the big tyres.
my radiator has the cooler ports blocked as i'm running a manual, so can i run the p/steer through the radiator as a cooler? only thing is the radiator is in the back of the truck, so will that be too much line to be running the fluid through?
or should i just get a small oil cooler and mount it near the box?

my buggy is getting a cooler and small thermofan, was getting a bit hot

The radiators can have a tendancy of allowing water into the oil cooling lines down the track, which is never good. This happened a bit in the Commodore ~VS models which had to auto trans cooler running into the edge of the radiator.
It might also be a strain on the pump to pump the fluid to the radiator when mounted at the back of the truck.
Just get a small auto trans cooler or power steering cooler, and mount it close to where your pump, etc is. Tuck it out of the way, so you don't collect it when 4x4ing.
Its up to you whether to just rely on convective cooling or mount it at the front to get some air flow through it, like a normal radiator. In saying that, crawling won't produce much air flow anyways. You can always be like LJ and mount a small fan on it wherever you install the cooler.

Oil Cooler for PS
I had problems on my HZJ80 with power steering fluid over heating with big tyres and slow off road work.
So I went to a wrecker that dismantles 4wds as they come rummaged around in their oil coller parts bins till I found something that would work for me, and mounted it behind the front cross member so it gets a little air from the large holes in the cross member.
This addes some volume to the oil as well as allowing greater heat disappation. Problem solved.

You will need a cooler 100%
I have cooked 2 pumps now and I run the same motor and pump as you.
I put one of those alloy round cylinder type ones on the lux after I cooked the 1st pump. I then cooked another pump. Before I drive the hilux again it will be getting a big huge cooler mounted complete with thermos.
If I was you I`d mount the biggest cooler you can fit (since you have rear mounted rad you have lots of room) and put a thermo or 2 on it.
Oh and I`d be taking a spare ps pump to TTC as well. I got one from the local jap wrecker for $180.

power steer fluid boils and changes colour, it goes from a bright red colour, and ends up a darker brownish colour, any discouluration id be lookin for contaminants or signs of boiling, or even when the steering gets harder to turn as hotter fluid looses viscosity, there maybe other ways as wellbut thats all i can think of,
