Recommended Oils for 80 Series
Hey Guys...
I've got a 80 series Auto 96 Cruiser Petrol. Its got around 190,000km on the clock and is bog stock.
Its pretty much been serviced at Toyota all its life.
The car was previously my parent's, and I'm starting to get more into offroading, so I'm pretty much a newbie.
Anyway, nowadays the car seems to feel very sluggish, going up hills on normal roads seem to be a struggle.
I wanna start off by changing all the oils and fluids in the car to ones better than what the factory puts in.
What do you guys recommend for:
- Engine oil (I was thinking along the lines of a Fully Synthetic like a Castrol Edge 10W60)
- Diff oil
- Gearbox oil
What other things should I look at to try and bring the car back to its former glory?

Yep, I've been reading about extending the diff breather hoses. Apparently the stock car can really only cross about 30cms of water depth safetly.DIRTY ROCK STAR wrote:Make sure you have diff breathers if you do any mud driving mate.

yeah you can buy kits on ebay, or just buy some hose and run it up along your chassis, into the engine bay and throw on a fuel filter on that end.
there was a good article in 4wd monthly a couple of yrs back if you can get ahold of it. will keep the water and mud out of your diff alot longer.

Also found some articles on how to do it on some other forums.
Will definately look into getting it done, after i start poking around and familiarising myself with the car.

If you are worried about a lack of power, air filter and spark plugs and leads is a good point to start at.
oils wont really give you much difference in comparison to leads,plugs and air filter.
or maybe the exaust is a bit clapped out and not flowing well???

well the better more pricey stuff is usually better.
but it just depends what your after and what you wanna do, its never going to be a race car so anything will do i reckon.
air filter, you can go a uni filter style wet foam job. they breathe better but are pricey and re usable.
or a standard paper job. paper needs throwing out, but it can be handy to have a spare paper one incase of any dramas like water....
up to you there , or more its up to your budget.

I use penrite engine oil, and penrite diff oils.
Remeber if you have a limo, different diff oils are used.
Seeing tojo have serviced the car, I would stick to their oil, dont go changing it now.
Give it a nice service and she should run a bit better.
