UHF antenna mounting

Post by nicbeer »

Hey

Can anyone forsee any problems in mounting the uhf 6.5db extended feed on rear of vehicle so it sits with the coil part just above the roof line?

I am aiming for maximising coverage and minimising breakage as i seem to do when mounted on the bull bar or on the end of the qrter panels near headlights.

Have you tried mounting it on a Spring Base?

They do come apart at the top so that the coax can desoldered and removed. I stuck a spring under mine a week ago.

Leave enough metal of the crimp part there and it can be soldered. I've cut plenty of crimped connections in my time and soldered the wire back on. Havn't had a failure yet.

That will screw the impedance of the feedline and reduce performance. If you attach a SWR meter before and after you'll see a big drop in efficiency

I doubt it will make any difference where it is on your car. Not enough to warrant extra hassles anyway. But what do I know... I fix trains not cars !

I know it affects the ground plane as its is in front and not behind the antenna but i am thinking it will now get better in front and worse behind, opposite as per before?

For the best performance stick it in the middle of the roof, this is the best plane you will get. start to deduct the performance as you move the arial around the 4by, but with 6.5 db you wont notice much where you put it.

Crimped joints (alone) aren't the best thing to be sticking out in the environment on any electrical connection. They are far more succeptable to corrosion then a joint that is soldered or covered in solder.

For any slight differences a soldered joint may make, a corroded crimped joint would be exceptionally worse.

I took mine off to fit a spring base as the bottom of the tube (??) was starting to crack. The guys at the Electric Bug ( Adelaide) gave me a diagram to enable the cable to be resoldered allowing specific dimensions for the cable and the sheath........if this makes sense. :?
