looking for a job to do with 4wds

hey everyone

Im 16 and just finished my school certificate, i am looking for a job doing pretty much anything to do with moding/fixing 4wds! i have checked out seek.com and looked in the paper but had no luck. i would love to work at Overkill 4x4 and other places alike! if anyone could help me out or point me in the right direction i would be very appriciative. I am willing to work long hours and weekends just as long as i have a secure job. im in the penrith area and have been working for my dad on and off for about 4 years now, and working for my dad, he works me like a dog! i can start any time and looking to start an apprenticeship!

If you dont get taken up by a 4wd workshop it could also be an idea to get a fabrication apprenticship elsewhere and when you have your trade papers then go to a 4wd workshop.
You could also go electrical or mechanic so there are many ways to get into the industry.

go around to the shops youd like to work for, present yourself nicely and take a copy of your resume to give to them. If you are really keen offer to work on saturdays or something for nothing at first, if there is work available im sure most shops will give you a go. That way they can get an idea of what kind of person you are and you can see if you would like to work there. Its hard to find good people that want to work these days, so if you show your that kind of person im sure they will snap you up.

Also yeah getting a trade as a mechanic or machinist will go a long way as well. You may not work with 4b's straight away but youll be better skilled to do so.

While I am actually in favour of this approach for showing you have a brain and a real desire to work (since at 16 you don't normally have an extensive employment history like us older fellas) ... would you believe no-one can do this these days?

I won't say it is gospel but I was told recently that OHS doesn't cover people who are not on the payroll so the businesses are at great risk if they let you work on the premises in case you get injured.

mate a few of my mates that left skool end of last yr and just went and applied themself for 2 weeks of work experience and got paid like a $100 for the two weeks and at the end of it 3 out of 4 got offered a job!!!

quite often u dont get the job that you want straight away due to lack of experience.

but gaining experience from trade, ADF, work experience, apprentiiceships does help.

learn how to weld would be one of the biggest things... mig welding and tig welding are on the the skills needed when someone in the 4wd industry looks for someone to work for them.

Take on a prevocational course in welding or the like and move up the ladder...

And how is working at 4WD monthly going to get him working on 4wd's? He might get the chance to look at them and touch bits but he's not going to get any real hands on experiance in modifications, engineering, mechanical knowledge or any qualifications in the motor industry from it.

I agrea. ADF is the way to go. Get some real disiplin(sp) and some life experiances and qualification first then get out and do what ever you want in the future. If i had my time again and was just out of school. ADF is where i would head.

start a pre apprenticeship it takes about three months and is basicly the first year of a apprenticeship, except your at tafe full time. for example i did my cert II in engineering then changed my mind and started a boilermaking aprenticeship at a road tanker company. most companys will take a kid that has completed a pre app over kid with a year 12 pass.

even do a couple of welding tickets.

Oh and it doesnt hurt to take on a project at home... if you have access to a welder (old mans welder etc) maybe give it a go.... and start fabbing up stuff.. practice something.. .. buy an old suzuki and exo the hell out of it... make engine mounts, engine conversions..

Take photos as you go along.. they can be used as a reference for gettin a job showing what u can do..

Better yet.. start a project and pics and put it up on outerlimits and refer the forum link in your application also helps as it displays your abilities.

but like others have said the army or even air force have a nice aray of vehicals,
CFA as well and are often good place to do an apprentice ship in

but send out lots of CV,s to the forby joints around ya area there is bound to be at least one who wants a young bloke who wans to work

ok will do! yeh dad mentioned the ADF to me yesturday coz he thought it would be a good idea so i might look into it! also ill get some info on the welding tickets!

dude i done my apprenticeship through the army its a preety good scam, you get paid better than any other apprentice in australia and you will meet some really good mates but i tell you from experience that the good times are good but the bad times are really bad. If you do go, be a vehicle mech if you want to play with 4x4 (land rovers) or be an elecy if you want the money after apprenticeship. dont be a fitter machinist any monkey can cut and weld pick that up in your own time.

have to agree with the army thing . a mate joined as a tradeie straight outta his apprentceship and lern more about fabricating and machining than he ever lernt previously. nearly everything on his rig is fabricated him self.
