the bolt on pattern is identical so the GU steer box goes straight into the GQ, the connection is the different one, usually you need a steering arm like snake racings one with interchangeable ball joints so you can have a GU end where the steering box is and a GQ end at the swivel hub end, thats the easiest way. the pitman arms aren't swappable between the 2 boxes

What do you mean "the connection is different"?

Is the taper in the GU tie rod end larger than the GQ?

hi mate

you need the pitman arm from a 97 model GQ that has the GU steering box.
you will find that 97 patrols ( not all of them mind you) have the GU steering box and they have the pitman arm that you need.

Apart from the obvious pitman arm which hells you with a more horizontal draglink, is the GU box stronger than GQs? Any other advantage?

gu rod ends are smaller than gq. most guys just get them machined out to gq. I'm fitting one shortly - just waiting for fester to get back to me! but with gu diffs its a breeze
