Luke a bloke called troy gill on this forum has a Gu that has been chopped in to a ute, he is from Newcastle and has made his own exo and is a bloody neat job. You could try to PM him he might sent you some pics if you are lucky

Ok fair enough, I see your point.
As pointed out however, in a race application an exo would negatively affect wind resistance, plus, in a race car there is very little else other than the drivers seat and wheel which leaves a lot of room for an internal whereas in a fourby with camping/recovery gear, kids, missus, blah blah, space becomes a precious commodity very quickly (especially in a zook :D ).

Its a valid point about the diagonal brace on the B-pillar too. However, an exo does afford alot more room for extra triangulation which when used correctly, provides a whole heap of strength. I cant comment though on an exos performance in a high-speed rollover as Ive never seen it happen. Perhaps someone else can chime in here? The majority of 4wd is done at fairly low speed for which an exo is great IMO.

There was a vid posted on here a while ago maybe someone has the link?? It was a vid of some military (i think) test on one of their troop transport trucks with an exo cage, deliberately rolled down a hill. It toppled several times but held up fine.

Another important reason why an EXO cage is not accepted as roll over protection over an internal cage is because in a rollover the internal cage is somewhat protected by panels to help it keep its strength where a exo will be copping all of the hits which are weakening it.

An exo cage is a good idea as when you are out 4x4ing you will accidently slide or what ever and dent your rig in places that an exo would have saved you from.

Most of the winch challenge vehicle have some sort of EXO to help prevent body damage.

An idea would be to fit the exo as close to the body as possible like right in your roof gutters for it not to become a legal problem.

geez stirred up a hornet's nest here.

just to clear it up, i will not be racing the car. if i do it will be getting a full internal cage. i don't rock crawl, just punt along tracks.

i think the point where if the good guys don't do it then why should i is invalid. the exo as pointed out adds more weight, makes the car a little wider etc. However on a GU ute i think the extra weight would make little difference.

Saw the GU ute you were talking about in Coldstream, not Stu's from FAT.
Looked a bit strange to me.

Each to their own though.

Just think it's irresponsible to do IF it's a daily driver. My 2 cents, for what it's worth. :D

Mate, most think that stock 4wd's are irresponsible as daily drivers, let alone lifted big tyred trucks with bar work all over.

I just think that we're under the hammer as it is without going to these extremes.

If you drive hard, but carefully and resposibly your likely to suffer little to no damage.

I think everyone is entilted to there opionion however i think people down south with exception of cheezy are more high speeds type people.

When we go in the bush we going 4wding but we dont rock crawl most of the time its race between mates, well thats what i do i very rarely use low range and its only on steep decents.

So i can see where you guys coming from and thats where i'm coming from ive copped panel damage i wear it.

But it comes to a point were trucks go to extreme and an xo stands out to much, i know about this other truck as well as it goes to ARB head office and mates that work there say its not a pretty truck with alot of protuding edges.

If we all did rock crawling yeah maybe an xo but for high speed shit an xo wont do much in my opinion and this is also the views of many others that do comps , i would rather have safty of an internal cage as so many weekend worries have rolled there trucks.

what type of 4x4 do you do??? i think thats called rally! there is not many of the tracks that we do which you could race up!! a mate of mine who got run over on his moto by an idiot going too fast around tracks might disagree with you aswell.

My exo is enigeered and i daily drive it, i dont think im irresponsible. If you drive carefully and dont push your rig to its limits then you will get away without some form of protection, i didnt build my rig to drive all the easy lines, its a fine line between pushing the limits and over the limits, so i see an exo for the type of driving i do as essential.

I see your point though that some people will look at my rig as some kind of nature killer, but im not about to change it for these ignoramuses. I get far more thumbs up than shaking heads when i drive down the road :D

NSW, talk to an engineer, most reasonable ones will pass it as long as its well built.
