Buying an 80 - Transfercase problem

Post by Luxy »

Looking at buy a diesel 80 series.

I looked at the weekend (a 94 standard diesel 80), didnt seem to bad, but I was a little put off by the powering steering pump leaking badly, and has been for a while.
So theres about $500, and also when I took it for a run and tested out the transfer case, something didnt seem quite right about it.

Instead of having to lift the stick up to go into low range, once it seemed to just slide straight down from high to low without lifting the stick up.
The guy also said when he got the car at 80,000kms (its now just over 200,000kms), he got a RACV test on the car prior to purchase and they said there was something slightly loose.
But he has never bothered to get it fixed up.

Any ideas what this could be? Im guessing just a bearing or 2 though, but I dont want to get it, and then find out I need reco it or anything when I pull it apart to see what the problem is.

Apart from a couple of pinion seals leaking etc, it didnt seem to bad. He has got reciepts of the work that has been done to it since 40,000kms, and says its has had the oil changed every 5,000kms.
Just wondering whether its worth offering a little less, or look for something else.

Thanks

In my 95 80 auto you dont have to lift the low range stick you just put it in neutral and move it straight in,
I put a kit through my P/S pump a bit fiddly but all leaks gone and no where near $500
Hope this helps Luxy

Don't forget there is a difference between part time t/case and full time. Is yours full time? On a full time case you can pull it thru from High - N - Low. A part time one will be 2H-4H-N-4L.

The part timer has a spring in there to make you lift up....most of the time, it gets full of mud/rust, and stays lifted from the last low range...so its nothing....the pump is a $120 kit and some time...the steering box is also repairable with a $180 kit...check colour of oil and smell of oil, if it is black and old, use this to lower price, as it obviously hasnt been maintained, so the brake fluids will also need maintaining etc
These cruisers are coming down in price...look on ebay

The one im looking at is part time 4wd being the standard Cruiser.

I might still get a racv check on the car then, and can use some of the defects and problems bits to bump down the price a bit then too.

I was thikning of a 95 onwards factory turbo, but gee, they hold there price dont though! Although I think there are some dreamers out there, looking at almost $40,000 still :?

Thanks for the tips and help so far guys! :)

$40K.....................they are cheaper than that. There is one on car sales for about 22. I have seen a few over the last 12 months from 20-30K. A couple I saw for 20K and auto was in good nick with about 250,000 on the clock. $40K...............................tell him he's dreamin!
