80 Auto's- what's what? I figured it out

Just sorting out what box goes with each 80 series both in petrol and diesel, not a real lot of info on the net. I have come up with the following

A440 - 4 Speed with overdrive- 3F and 3FE has a A440

A442F - 4 Speed with overdrive - 1FZFE has A442F but in different configurations.

Pre update models (95 I think) had an ECT button but no 2nd Start. Also had no lock out on the O/D (ie no overdrive button) Selector was L-2-D-N-R-P.

Post 95 (update models) had A442F with Power button, 2nd gear Start and O/D button with L-2-D-N-R-P on selector but had O/D button on shifter as well.

All 4.5 (1fzfe) are electronically controlled but in different configurations.

Diesels - this is the one that confuses me because I think a lot of shops have it wrong.

I think all 80 series 1HDT and IHDT-FT had A442Fs, but in different configurations.

I believe 1HDT had 1-2-3-4-N-R-P on the selector with lock up convertor (not the A440F that it has mistaken for) This box in NOT electronically controlled, has no O/D but 4 gear as such on the selector instead of O/D with a lock up convertor.

Post 95 Diesels with 1HDT-FT(update models) had a electronically controlled A442F exactly the same as the update 1FZFE (different convertor though) with L-2-D-N-R-P with O/D lock out, power button and 2nd gear start. I believe the two as a bare box are interchangable between petrol and diesel in update models.

I'd appreciate feedback from any guys with auto's and let me know what year they have and the configuration for correct me where i am wrong.

The reason is I have come across a number of early 1HDT autos that have the A442F in it (according to the placard) but has 1-2-3-4 on the shifter and is not electronically controlled. Therefore I think it would be possible to put in a 1HDT-FT on this box (with the right shifter) with no electrical issues as it is full hydraulic.

Just want to clear it up

Mine is a 11/93. Definitely has and O/D button!

Mines a 91 with 3FE and an A440F i noticed you didnt have the F after the A440 not sure if that is significant or not.

1990-8/92 have the a440f, same as 60 series, designated by the 123dnrp and no electro. had heating problems when towing because of no lockup till certain speed and gear.
When the 1fzfe came out, it went electro control on them and turbo diesel, with od button and ect button (power/eco) After 95, toyota just added a switch and programme to the ect to start in 2....no other difference.
Other than the bell and converter, plus the ect computer, the 442 is interchangeable...early gxv 100 has the a442 aswell with v8 bell, converter and ect computer.

I know what you are saying and I thought the same thing, but I have seen 3 80 series, 2 x 90 1 x 91 (2 were sahara's 1 import 1 aust) and all three had A442F on the plate. The shift pattern was 1-2-3-4-N-R-P. They had no overdrive. This is what confused me when I lifted the bonnet. According to wholesale auto's the early diesels were a a442f and not electronically controlled. I tend to think he is right. If anyone has a 90/91 diesel auto I'd like to here what you have on the ID plates

Ok, firstly...if Rodney says they were 442f's, they are... I dont know what the difference is then...as i always believed the 440f was hydraulic control, and the 442f was electronic....but this info proves that theory busted...
The 442 must have different guts to the 440.

Rodney has stated that the a440f has overheating problems when towing, because it doesnt lock up till a certain speed, and if you yow slower, it overheats...this is exasperated if v8 is put up front...does the a442 have thesame problem?? I think it would.
The 442f locks up in economy in 2,3 and 4, and shifts late in power, not selecting od till 100 km/hr whilst the 442 only locks in 3 and 4 after 80 km/hr. So....for ease of conversion, the 442...but Marks do v8 diesel conversions on 442f's without a problem, all u need is throttle position feedback, as in the later t/d 80's
the 3f 80 series got manual,and 3fe got auto...and it was a hydraulic one, because i almost bought one (123dnrp)

Yep thats why i put the upgraded valve body in and put a fan on the oil cooler and bypassed it from the radiator as it heats it up anyway. I can drive off road up big long hills and cooler it still still pretty cool. A mate has one and his got heaps hotter than mine and it now runs colder with it bypassed. What a stupid idea in qld to run it thru the radiator. I know a guy in the club that tows heaps for the past 5 years and no problems yet...............but he has had nothing changed on it so who knows how long it will last. If it dies I'll probably get an extreme box built
