To repair or not to repair???

Post by Vanhack »

Dear all,
I need some advice on the following repairs that need to be made, I have a LWB GQ TB42E with 130,000 km (which I put on), it has seen offroad abuse, about twice a month. I wish I had the time to do the repairs myself, but just dont have the time, and dont have all the tools either , found a mechanic who is a Partol specialist for the last 15 years who will carry out the below list:
  • Left front axle knuckle leak, I will have this repacked for sure, but should I have the knuckle overhauled, as in all seals and bearings whilst open? We can't get the kits like you do in OZ, but our Nissan parts are cheaper than yours in OZ.
  • Slight 'whirring' sound from clutch, when I depress the clutch the sound disappears, probably the thrust bearing, (as advised from other posts). I had the clutch replaced about 11 months ago, so dont need to overhaul the whole clutch, but is it worth dropping the gearbox just for the thrust bearing or should I wait? What is the max damage that can happen when the bearing is toast?
  • Front body mounts creaking, probably replace front 2, any others that I need to replace.
  • Left front door hinge replacement.
Cheers, :)

how much is he going to charge you to do all this? if you question is do i keep it or get rid of it? it all depends on what its worth to replace compaired to repairing it.

Left front axle knuckle leak = yes full rebuild or at least check serviceability of all parts.

Slight 'whirring' sound from clutch = depends how bad, but can usually wait, worst that can happen? ive only seen them get noisy. (im sure someone else can give you a horror story tho  )

Front body mounts = if they are that bad

Left front door hinge replacement = if its that bad

if thats all that was wrong with mine id be happy

It is only a $20 axle seal that needs replacing but the whole lot needs to be stripped to get to it. See what you mechanic says about the rest of the stuff. Could end up a $300 to $400 dollar job or more...

Tighten up your body mounts. Takes 10 minutes. :D

Spray your door with a lubricant. :D
