dodgy dash gauges

Hi all,

I am having some issues with the dash gauges since i got this new zook a while back. it was all occuring before i did the engine swap so i doubt the issue is the temp sender unit etc.

ISSUE: Fuel gauge starts at quarter and up. found that out the fun way (no fuel on the highway :P)
and the temp gauge goes way up as soon as i have been driving for about a minute. i had replaced the thermostat and all coolant and the issue continues. i would assume that it isnt the temp sender as it occurred with the old engine and this engine never had issues in my other zook.
i am thinking that it may be a dodgy earth or some such thing. any know where the earths for the dash are located?
was going to maybe put a WT dash cluster in if i could source one..

anyways any thoughts ideas would be appreciated.. i may just pull the dash apart and see if i can get behind the gauges and have a look.

cheers mate sounds about right.. ill check all grounds etc tomorrow.

fuel tank has a big dent in the bottom left.. didnt think of that. cheers! :D

will update with my progress

Gday,

I noticed something interesting today while I was driving....
The stock temp gauge, which I had tried to hard to get working in the past, and hasnt worked for years, the needle started moving up.... it went all the way to the top... so I concluded that the wire was earthing in the engine bay somewhere...

Sure enough it was touching the engine block.... :?
I had formerly put the gauge down to being broken... but if its taking a reading when being earthed, I thought I would experiment...

I have a aftermarker temp gauge sitting on the dash, which has a black wire going from the sender to the gauge itself... I snipped the wire and joined it up to the yellow stock wire which goes to the old gauge... took the car for a drive... no reading... I then stopped and earthed the yellow, and the needle started to move...

My question: Is the gti temp sender different from the stock sierra sender on the G13a engines? If yes, will it screw into the gti engine?
I really want to get rid of this 2 inch monstrosity sitting on my dashboard....

if engine is coping at low revs but not at hwy revs it could be a partly blocked rad. when revs are up water doesnt stay in rad long enough to cool thus overheating.
1999 SQ625 Manual Grand Vitara. Lifted, Twin Locked, 31' Extremes, dual Batteries, Winch.
Lots of custom gear as I cant afford the proper stuff.
