Slick 50...Good or bad..
Slick 50...Good or bad..
A reputable mechanic suggested I give my Sierra a dose of Slick 50 to help against the piston slap type noises during cold start/running on my '96 SJ80 Coily..
Has any used this stuff and had success?????

i've use it in a late model six cylinder turbo jap car.
the turbo spooled up quicker and the rev's, at idle, went up by about 500rpm.
got told not to put it into a new motor, as the motor won't "bed in" properly.
i swear by the engine treatment, don't know about the gearbox or power stear treatments though.

Heck, I'm really to sure what or how it sounds if my coily has this problem. Almost sounds like a piston slap which gradually decreases as engine warms up. Suzuki in Adelaide reckon they have seen a couple come in with a cracked No.3 piston. Is my problem like other known cases with coilys.lay80n wrote:Your coily hasnt got the typical coily piston problem, cracking ring lands etc has it old Grizzly ??
Layto....
i've used it in a few cars and reckon it is good stuff. oil never seemed to be a dark at service time and engines seemedto rev smoother. a bit pricey but good shait. better than the nulon stuff.

I've been driving the same Laser for 12 years, it now has 350 000 ks on it and has had Slick 50 in it every 80 000 or so. The oil still looks new every oil change and does not have the horrible burnt smell you get after an oil is changed out. It had 17 000 on it when I bought it and still goes bloody well.
Great stuff.

sorry to drag up an old thread, BUT,
i have a hate for slick 50. i bieleve it is the s***est stuff oyu could put in the engine. i would fill mine with sand before using it.
reason } apun recentley stripping a g13b that had done about 200,000 kays. every bit of the inside ov the engine had a 1/16 thick brown/red coating. it took several hours to clean only the block (using a machine that sprays high pressure 90 degree water, with a very strong chemical) tripple that for the head.
not only that but every single oil drainidge hole on the piston (in the oil ring groove) was blocked, solid. the same story for the hole in the conrod to spray oil up the bore and cool the pistons. oil punp relief valve too.
just my opinion, but i am a diesel mechanic.

Sorry to throw this out there as I understand its not on topic, but earlier in this thread it had been said that 96 coilys had a problem of some sort with the pistons... Can someone please elaberate on this? As i have noticed a weird noise when i throw the power on, sorta like tapping, dont know if its valve clearances or what, but if there is a common problem, i would love to hear about it,
Cheers.
Cheers.

Is it a load clacking type sound, or more of a tapping sound ? and does it do it at idle when it is cold ?da13ro wrote:Sorry to throw this out there as I understand its not on topic, but earlier in this thread it had been said that 96 coilys had a problem of some sort with the pistons... Most likey the motor is pinging (pre-ignition) do a quicl web search or run premium unleaded.

I havn't used the stuff, but was very unhappy with a marketing presentation I went to re Slick50.
After lots of discussion about running engines with no oil etc etc, I asked if they had tried it in a rotary. Answer was Yes - we have run a rotary without oil after using Slick50 and no problems.
I found that very interesting as mazda rotaries use the oil to cool the rotors - around 30% of the engines heat load is into the oil ( could be higher /lower - been awhile ).
So it seemed a little too good to be true - hard to seperate the hype from the facts. Another issue is that it takes around a 15% change in performance for people to "feel the difference" and that seems just about too much for an oil treatment.
However these things are often matters of personal preference.

It seemed like a much better idea when I started it than it does now.

First used it in my old 75 series which had a very noise 5th gear, two tubes and most of the noise was gone, the gearbox also lived for quite some time after that.
Well I'm guessing that they didn't think everyone would carry on like a big bunch of sooky girls over it like they have........
Yeah it seems to only happen under load, for example going up a steep hill and when you get into the higher revs just before you would change gear, doesnt sound HORRIBLE but i wouldnt say it sounds good, its very hard to say what it sounds like. So you think 'pinging'. Ill jump onto google, sorry about hjack!love_mud wrote: Is it a load clacking type sound, or more of a tapping sound ? and does it do it at idle when it is cold ?

Edit/ its not a ping thats for sure, more of a tap tap really fast... doesnt do it at idle, only under load at high revs.

If the engine has dropped a piston skirt it's a fairly dramatic noise, they start to sound something like a Diesel, regardless of load.
Sounds more like pinging to me. Check timing/try more octane
