Dump pipes
Lookin round for info on dump pipes, some places use cast ones, others make them up as u go.
Would there be much difference in a cast one and a made up (I presume out of pipe) job?
hearing varying reports on some of them.
MTQ 3in is apparely only 2 1/4 and $250
Beau D is genuine 3inch $240 i thn it was
Denco I havent seen so cant tell if its a genuine 3inch, but have sent email for price and measurements.
ATS dont sell their 3inch dump on its own.... :(
Custom ones from exhaust are around the same bux with a couple a bit less..
So the question, would a made as you go from exhaust be good enough?

Re: Dump pipes
dont think I worded that gooderer enough
Would a dump pipe made as you go from exhaust by exhaust shop be good enough or worse or better than a Cast one - both being 3inch...

A reckon that a good qaulity dump pipe can be made from exhaust material/thin walled tube by a good exhaust shop. Its just whether the time and effort makes it worth doing.
I recently ordered a Beaudesert 3" dump pipe to suit the 1HD-FT thats going into my PZJ70. Its quite well made however I did think it was going to be cast. Its not, its made out of tube, but a fair bit of attention has gone into creating the right shape with minimal restrictions. overall I think I would have prefered a 3" dump that was cast.. but I couldnt find one.. and thats just my personal preference anyway.
Heres a comparison photo that Beaudesert sent me to show the size of their dump pipes. All 3 pipes are to suit a 4.2lt GU.

Cheers

sweet Mr.. Thanks for that, be interested how you find it when it turns up if its 3inch right through, or at least on the other side.. quality and other info.smithie wrote:Heres a comparison photo that Beaudesert sent me to show the size of their dump pipes. All 3 pipes are to suit a 4.2lt GU.

lemme know
Beaudesert exhasts do some of the best performance exhausts i have seen. They have been around for years and are known for quality work. You wont be disapointed in the quality. And if you are they are easy to deal with so dont hessitate to give them a call.
PS: They generaly are not cheap but you get what you pay for.

Nup, im too pussy wipped. Ill be up there Next month so might pay them a visit while im there. Will also give a chance to see how bad the Pootrol is towing.bogged wrote:your missus still wont give approval... if your doing it, go 3inch. I'll order mine today - you want me to order yours too? Beaud ones..ddr wrote:Nice, That 2 1/2" could almost pass off as the factory item.
Thanks dude, they have a good rep... mate JR on here got one for his GU Ute, and he was wrapped.. And as you know, Im an advocate of GWYP4...RUFF wrote:Beaudesert exhasts do some of the best performance exhausts i have seen. They have been around for years and are known for quality work. But the packing and freight costs sorta kill it off at close to $200 shipping and handling and packing...
I can get a system for $500 - 700 locally, when BD is $870 + total is over a grand..
Have seen the work of Trufit round the corner that do hotrods and lots of turbo skyline etc work.. Pretty good! But you never know until its too late
Single dadism is expensive or I'd go BD :(
I thought she gave you permission for pipe and suspension?ddr wrote:Nup, im too pussy wipped..
sweet Mr.. Thanks for that
no probs, HTH.
I just re-read my original post though and thought I'd just make a small clarification to ensure that the picture is totally clear to anyone reading it.
From left to right.
Pic 1: Beaudesert 3" dump pipe made from thin walled tube
Pic 2: An unspecified (not Beaudesert) aftermarket 2 1/2" cast dump pipe
Pic 3: Factory 2 1/4" cast dump pipe
All are to suit a 4.2lt GU.
I have actually already received my dump pipe and can confirm that it is quite well made. The pipe is bent with smooth, large radii and it looks like it will flow quite well (100% improvement over the factory system anyway!)
I didnt get a full system from Beaudesert as my appilcation is a bit custom, and they dont have an off the shelf 3" system for an xxJ70.
I'll be getting a full 3" mandrel bent system from a local manufacturer that I deal with a bit through work.
Cheers
Dan
you tool, you should have told her they did. my god your soft.ddr wrote:Nup Nissan didnt give a good enuf OK.bogged wrote:I thought she gave you permission for pipe and suspension?ddr wrote:Nup, im too pussy wipped..
get ya visa card, and saturday you and me are goin shoppin..
I'll speak with Cossie.
They gave me an indicative price of $600, bearing in mind that they dont normally do work privately and I deal with them a bit at work where they make us 6" mandrel bent pipes so they are helping me out. I'll also have to do all the design work, which is no problem, they'll just plug the numbers into the cnc computer and hit "go."bogged wrote:you got a price yet?
I've had similar prices.smithie wrote:They gave me an indicative price of $600, bearing in mind that they dont normally do work privately and I deal with them a bit at work where they make us 6" mandrel bent pipes so they are helping me out. just ordered the dump... So we are on the move.
I little I have learnt from previously racing turbo cars and street cars.
Cast dump is best as it keeps the exhaust temps up and helps the gas keep moving down the exhaust. This results in the turbo being able to spool earlier due to higher speeds of gas. You can often also get a better design from a cast dump as it is easier to fabricate once the final mold is made. It is the same reason that one would heat wrap and exahust dump and extractors. Heat wrapping extractors can aid in spooling dramatically from my experience. Essential if you move to larger extractors and want to retain the bottom end.
A good quality dump in petrol cars has a torque relationship between the size of the dump and the angle and distance at which it bends. Changing these can bring on peak torque early and give a bigger torque spread. Often peak torque remians the same though. To perfect these is just trial and error really as each model of car will react different due to the different designs. I spent a lot of time researching about WRX which really makes it useless for other models.
Also recent results have shown that on lower capacity turbo cars, a 3" dump followed by a 2.5" mid and rear section often gives better torque and peak power due to aiding in gas flow, as the gas cools it contracts..
A splitter separates the exhaust main flow and the waste gate flow. This helps the two flows path to integrate and cuts down on turbulence, again reducing back pressure which enables a higher peak power and speeding up exahust gases for earlier spooling
