They are a single over head cam, two litre engine that also came in the celicas from about 77 to 84 roughly.
The 18RG is the twin cam version which can be either twin carbied or fuel injected and takes to a turbo well.

But what is it you want to know about the engine?

yes same motor, but the carby's and inlet manifolds maybe different same as the exhaust. If they are just swap these over when you do teh change.

As for boring out the engine, unless you are doing all the work yourself I wouldn't bother. You can pick up a reco'd 18rg for about the $1200.00 mark with warrenty, or look around for complete cars.
I bought a 78 celica with a 18rg that was in excelt condiation (running gear wise) for $600 cause the body was stuffed.
Sold my old engine and the left over bits off the car for 500,
$100 bucks for a new twin cam engin and 5 speed box :D

My 79 RN46 had an 18RG as did my 81 RN36, but I would think you are bang on about the sumps being diferent.

Swap your "hang ons" to any 18R and you are good to go
