Ski Racing fabrication project.
A few of you know I tend to get involved in some pretty interesting fabrication projects at times. Well here's one way out of left field it's a link to a Youtube video of a triple rotor 20b rotary turbo putting out about 750 bhp in a ski racing boat.
This video is a while ago and it has been completely modified now as it was melting the turbo exhaust housing and now uses a water cooled turbo housing.
Most of the aluminium fabrication work you can see is mine except for the PWR barrel water to air intercooler.
He is racing this weekend at the Australian championships in Jindabyne but he's not sure how he'll go as we were still welding some bits for it today.
Rohan Ambrose from Extreme Rotaries built the motor and the stuff he builds has to be seen to be believed.
Rohan has plans to design and build a quad rotor which is inherently better balanced than a triple so should rev much harder and he thinks he can get an easy 1200 bhp out of it. (he's already got the fastest 13B twin rotor in the world in a car in Puerto Rico putting out over 950 bhp at the wheels.)

Got nuthin on a methanol drinkin 502ci chev with tunnel rams, over transom pipes, pure horsepower, rotarys are good dont get me wrong, but 3 problems i dont like, 1: every ethnic person n there dog has them 2: gota rebuild twice as often 3: try make one pull up a hill, dies in the ass quicker than a toyota
Me, I've always been a "tech head" from the early Cosworth DFV V8's and BDA 4 cylinder rally motors, right through the Turbo F1 era and into the 20,000 rpm monsters we have today.Chook350 wrote:Got nuthin on a methanol drinkin 502ci chev with tunnel rams, over transom pipes, pure horsepower, rotarys are good dont get me wrong, but 3 problems i dont like, 1: every ethnic person n there dog has them 2: gota rebuild twice as often 3: try make one pull up a hill, dies in the ass quicker than a toyota
Having worked on this with Paul the owner and Rohan the engine builder I've really come to appreciate the effort these guys have gone to in what is essentially a real "budget racer" effort.
The boat hull is now too small for the horsepower being produced and to mix with the big boys a composite hull that they run costs about $50,000.
The twin turbo V8's use a gearbox in conjunction with the stern drive while Paul uses the stern drive only. Paul's competitors can't believe the speed this thing generates for a fraction of the cost of what they pay for their racing.
The harmonics being generated by the V8 engines in a boat are destroying the engines and most of the big boys have at least 2 engines working in rotation.
The new "killer" engine is the Mercury Motorsport 1075 (1075 bhp minimum) twin Lysholm supercharged, which has won both races it entered out of the box. Great stuff but it costs (depending on who you speak to) between $110,000 and $140,000.
Rohan thinks he could build a "turn key" quad rotor with over 1200 bhp (reliable) for around $50,000-$60,000 using the best of everything.
Consider this: His gun dragracing 13b 2 rotor in Puerto Rico is already putting out over 1000 bhp at the flywheel and essentially a quad is simply 2 13b's in line.
Paul used to race in the 6 litre class in the boats and he says this is the most fun he's ever had. He's had lots of teething problems but they seem to have overcome them one by one and he just loves powering past the V8's under full noise.

This is a pic of Rohan's 13b drag racing monster, looks purrrrrty doesn't it. This is essentially the same engine as the Puerto Rican one and with the right turbo and engine management it will produce over 1000 bhp.
I built the plenum chamber on this one. It's peripheral port with Rohan's own custom injection runners and on this one there's 6 "indy blue" 1600 cc injectors per inlet runner. I think the most injectors we've ever put on one runner is 9 indy blue ones so 18 injectors on a twin rotor.
The beauty of Rohan's peripheral port system is it's modular so you can fit it to a single, twin, triple, quad, whatever number of rotor housings you can think of.
What's better, is that most of it is made in house here in Aus and the Yanks can't believe the stuff he builds.

I know that years ago when I rebuilt my 13b in the RX-4, there were a few guys playing with triple and quad rotories. (Prob 19 years ago)
From memory the biggest problem was with the length of the shaft that the rotors were attatched to and the amount of flexing they were doing. Seems like they've overcome these issues

Here's another video of Paul's boat taken on the Patterson Lake water course centre. He guns it at 60mph to over 100mph, I just love this project
