Hi, all just found out that a toyota 2h diesel thermostate will fit right into a Rocky diesel. as mine just stuck shut tonight.
Just throught that i would let everybody know. ( might be a already knowen thing)

The 2h one looks different but is the same hight and dia. the only thing that is abit different is the seat that blocks of the water pump bypass when the engine warms up. But seems to be working fine at the moment
as for the hilux one will find out tomorrow as a mate is coming back from melbourne and has a 93 hilux and also 85 ish hilux so will check his spares out and see if they fit as well.

I've been chassing a decent bloody thermostat for years for my rocky. None of them seem to work properly. While the Daihatsu ones look the good's, ive found the rubber impregnated seat has a nasty habit of sticking clossed in cold weather causing temps to rocket up. Heard bad things about the Tridon ones from various sources but never actually used one myself. Currently running a Dayco one at the moment and not happy with that either... runs to hot in summer, good in winter but. Doesn't anyone make a decent one for the rocky??!!
I have questioned if the thermostat is actually my problem, but it has to be as the fan is fixed coupled, radiator is new, all hoses are new, new head, new water pump, new everything really.

I put a new Daihatsu thermostat in about 6 months ago along with a new radiator. Since then I smashed into a tree, radiator got smashed back into the fan and is now bent and buckled, but thankfully not leaking, and the fan coupling is all but gone. Took it for a long drive up the coast of xmas, along with alot of beach/dune driving on hot days and it never went above 1/2 way

I've of course got a Feroza, but I tried Tridon and Dayco thermostats and had various over heating issues on hot days. Paid the $$$ for the genuine Daihatsu thermostat and now it runs very well. Today was over 40 degrees and I could happily motor along in the traffic with the aircon on. I couldn't do that with the Tridon or Dayco.
Genuine only for me in the future!
PS: the genuine has a lot larger diameter opening than the other two.

Tabrocky went for a test run again today and temp was getting up to 3/4 so the bypass might not be getting blocked off fully as rocky has tapered seat and the 2h has a flat seat.
the test run was on 40c day running air con full with 31 tyres ( don't know the state of rad or water pump.
also the seat on the thermostat's are held on by c clips so will look at if they could be swapped over.

changed over the bypass block off's on the thermostat's ( easy swap ) the rocky shaft is abit bigger but just used a thin washer.
went for test drive and temp sat 1/2 way and went up a tad up a hill. although the out side temp was down 8 deg .
a mate has a old rocky engine sitting around so tomorrow i will rat the thermostat out of it and check the 2h bypass seat in the housing and see how different they are. ( also just remembered the 2h thermostat that i am using is about 7 years old )

My final solution to the problem was to buy a whole new turbo rocky!!!!
As said, apart from the sticking of the daihatsu ones, they worked perfectly normal. I think next one will be genuine. Might try a different coolant. Have been running castrol coolant since day dot. Noticed the rubber ipregnated on the thermostat was bubbling/swelling away from the metal slightly.
One other thought I had was the sticking only occured in very cold weather (opposite to when you would expect overheating). As my rocky has a direct coupled fan (no viscous hub), even if the thermostat only slightly opened on a cold day, it would be able to drop the engine temp substantially as the fan is constantly drawing maximum air and the radiator is in good nick. Ive often wondered if fitting a viscous coupling would reduce the severity of temperature swing. I.e. thermostat opens more, but fan operates at 50% or simmilar. This would allow it to keep a more constant temperature.
As the new rocky has a viscous hub, it'll be intresting to see how it goes.

picked up a 2h thermostat $25 and found out from burson auto parts that a genuine rocky one is also $25 on there books but they don't have them.
non genuine rocky and h2 are listed as the same parts, also some hilux do run the same one's to like 22r and some other *r engines along with petrol bundera and b 3b diesel and some dynas.
will have to wait for a good hot day to see how this one goes.
