can some one help? Got shaky steering on mq

Can some one please help i have i really bad shake in the front end of my mq, The steering shakes violently and does not stop till i have bought the car to a complete stop, it feels like the front end is about to fall out,

there appears to be nothing wrong with the front end that i can see and nothing was picked up in the roadworthy either.


one more thing does any one know how the tachos work on mq diesel

get a wheel balance and see if that fixes it.

MIone does it. Mine was the front shackel bushes on the chassis, Jack it up and start kicking the tyre,etc still you see something move.

1. check front springs mounting for wear. Shackle and chassis mounts
2. Tyre balance. swap on some tyres from a mates car to check
3. wheel bearings may need adjusting or replacing
4. king pin bearings may need replacing
5. Steering box may be worn and causing the wobble

that should get you on the right path.......

Happened to me too. And read about many others. Usually it is not just one thing wrong, but a few things that have worn enough to create enough play in the steering system to let them start the shaking.

Take it to a 4x4 mechanic and get the whole front end checked out.

Been there aswell. It is more then likely your front spring bushes. Also check where the hangers mount to the chassis, mine had a crack in the weld aswell.

i'll Have a look, But the dumb thing is that it has just passed victorian roadworthy the only things i had to fix was seat belt and new brake lines, The guys said all shackle rubbers, etc were in great shape but maybe not

man, check the front welds where the shackels are connected to your chasis. Mine were cracked both sides. Just re-weld, get a serious wheel balance and you aughta be good to go.

cant hurt replacing work shackels, bushes either.

Ok so it could be a lot of things....

Start with inspecting the front end as described above...
It could be just that something external is loose.


What solved the problem for me?
There was too many shims on the kingpin bearings!!

With time, the bearings wear out. If you don't want to change your kingpin bearings just simply remove a shim from each knuckle top and bottom.


ignore the writing on that one, thats just if you want to remove the kingpin bearing.... The shims go around the base.


Again ignore writing, but at least you know where the shims go. Don't forget the bottom ones!!! And always remove even amounts from both top and bottom
These pics are from a GQ, there shouldnt be much difference!

This a fairly easy fix before you start undo more complex things!!!
(try checking joints first tho!!)

Got most of the shakes out does a bit of shaking from 55 to 65, Before and after no worries bit of a pain round town but. I replaced the front end with a chassis i bought of ebay for 30 bucks not bad, i'm going to try changing the front springs again i think there a bit shagged but every bit helps....
