hi
im asking a question for a mate who is computer illeterate
he has a early 80's model hilux with an 18R engine and is looking at changing the gear box from the L40 4 speed manual to a G52 5 speed manual box.
is this possible to do easily with limited fabrication?
will the G52 box bolt straight to the 18R engine?
and if anyone knows how much you would pay for one of these?
any help would be great
thanks
Tim

The 4spd and 5spd are about the same length but I think you'll have bell housing problem's as the 5spd you want to use came out with a 3y.Then you'll need a transfer to bolt to g/box then tailshafts and on it will go till you start to wonder why you stated in the first place.

Re: 5 speed gear box qs
Fairly straight forward conversion. You need a complete 5spd and transfer from a 22R hilux. You also need the front shaft from same vehicle. As this combination is longer you will need to shorten the rear shaft and either get a custom Crossmember(i think Buds 4x4 can supply one to suit, user name on here is Bubs) Or make new mounts for the original crossmember further back on the chassie. You may also need to cut new holes in the floor for the shifters.Timoji wrote:hi

If you use late model tail shafts on an early hilux the pinion flange holes are the wrong size for the t/shaft bolts so they need to be drilled on the diff' flanges. The last of the RN46 hilux's came out with a 5spd that pretty well bolts straight in it may be easier to try and get one of these units as the original transfer bolts straight up.
