afaik widths of the diffs and general construction of them was exactly the same from the first generation (79?) right through to when the IFS diffs came out (97?) which were wider-rear only obviously. Not sure on the differences in ratios but Im sure it changed a bit over the years as there were quite a few different engines both diesel and petrol.

there is also differances in the strength of the front housing as i have noticed that the later front housings longer and stronger strengthening gussets on them

ok i just did what i shoulda done in the first place and had a look at www.dpi.wa.gov.au and found out why i can have them :(
only alowed a wheel track up to 1" (or 25mm) over manufacture specification. now next ques, is that only if we want to get away without and engineeers report, or is it still possible to go a larger wheel track if passed by engineer?

For the fronts I would try to get a set out of the LN/RN 10 X series due to the brakes, for the rear just look for anything 86+ on the narrow tracks and get the larger diameter housing, these will also have larger drums on the rear.

Here in the US we use the 1979-1985 axles. The 84-85 housing are stronger than the earlier models. In 86 the pickup (Hilux) went IFS here. Here is a link at Zuwharrie.com that may help you also:
