How to tell what model a Patrol is ? Can you change ratios ?

Post by CWBYUP »

Hi all

Just wondering what makes the differance between a MK and a MQ ?

I'm looking at one cheap but know stuff all about patrols.

Also it has auto lock in hubs can this be changed ?

What is the perch differance between a MK and MQ ?

Are the diffs interchangable ?

Sorry for all the questions but i know stuff all about these things.

Cheers Nick

I have just re-read the bible and it looks like some MQ / MK diffs arent interchangeable as far as ratio's are concerned.

Can one of the Gurus help me out here i am completely lost.

i think, THINK, the MQ is round headlights and MK has rectangular. Thats the only way i have ever differentiated between the two.

Based on specs in parts book, I believe that Mk sits a bit higher than mq, probably due to improved rear suspension. Also diff ratios a bit lower. Towing specs higher as well A bit more modern bits as standard (ac, 5 speed, interior etc) Auto hubs on some mk models.
89 gq dx. bone stock --- for now.

round head lights are MQ, rectangle IS MK. diffs were the same throught MQ,MK and some GQ leaf ute's, they are all interchangeable, as long as same ratio's are kept at each end of the vehicle, 5spd came out in some MQ's as did A/C and powersteering!, leaf packs are interchangable, but if you change the front packs, you also have to change shackles, i.e mk leafs=mk shackles same as mq leafs=mq shackles no matter what chassis there on. The diesel MQ's are 24vlt. except the turbo version there 12vlt. Some MK models came out with a Tacho dash, No Mq's came out with tacho's.
Alot is interchangeable between all model MQ and MK patrols... Have fun!

mk utes had h260 rear diffs like the leaf sprung gq's and some gu's
i think this may bewhere the confusion has arisen
someearly gq utes are rumoured to run a mk series front diff aswel

auto hubs are easyly exchanged im pretty sure gq hubs will also fit an mq
1hd-fte 5 speed tiptronic 105 series
