Post by NCpaj »

Well as the title says ive been wondering what to buy as my next 4wd as the paj is getting old and im looking for a car thats a bit newer and has got some nice bits (all im after is a/c and power steering)and will be better off road

So ive decided to buy a 75 seriesute -with the savings side i should have enough to buy one in round 6mths

im looking to get one with
-a 1hz
-power steer, air con
-no older than 93ish

ill have bout 15-17k to spend on it

is there any thing i should be looking out for apart from the usual(ex mining/army)

thanks heaps

yeh the engine mounts are changed but it's a toyota gearbox. the benifet of the older model is the stronger front diff and a cooler looking grill (well thats what i think anyway). but u get less comforts like headrests and A/C at least it has power stearing.

Look for rust around the bottom of the doors (inside) and rust in the footwell (it's uaually the passenger side for some reason - think it's when the windscreen leaks). Also look for rust/bog in the windscreen surround (again the lower part).

Keep an ear out for gearbox whine in 5th (i'd expect almost all original gearboxes of that vintage to have some).

I think the timing belts need to be changed every 90-100k's, which can be an exxy job if your paying someone else to do it - not really difficult though.

Just make sure you look at heaps of them and get to know them. As with any diesel try to get one with a good service history. The 1hz will live anywhere between 250000 - 500000+ depending on this...

i think the older model had the same diff as a 60 series and the post 90 model had the small front diff similar to a 80 series,
i know 80 series lsd's fit in the front and rear of the older model though

Same as what dogbreath_48 rust mine had it on both sides of the floorpans but i cut it out and welded in 3mm plate.

Lock in the front hubs put it 4wd and do a few laps in a circle and make sure you dont hear any clunks or clicks. When i bought mine the front diff was stuffed and hubs were also stuffed and didnt know till the missus and i went up to double island its first trip soon as we hit the soft stuff bang cluck.I was stupid and rushed into it and i didnt know the first thing about 4wd's so gain as much knowledge about cruisers as you can dont make the same mistake as me and also take someone with you if you can that knows a bit about 4by's.
But if you can also take a 79 series for a spin if your going to spend 15-17k why not save a little more and buy a 79 series ive seen a few around a resonable price anyway good luck mate and good choice of 4by..
One other thing try and find one with all the accerories bar, whinch ect save ya havin to buy that stuff later.

I would agree with what mac1cruz said about the 79's. if you try pickles automotive auctions you may get one real cheap. As BMA now require air bag's for all vehical's that enter there mine site's, and they have a lot of 79's all coming up for auction. Most have between 50 and 150 thousands k's.

climb under and have a look at the sump if its got lagging on it similar to sound deadner its come from a rather harsh enviroment

rust in footwells passenger side. ive got 3 tubs here the newest 96 has rust the other 95 and 94 dont, the 96 does leak though through the windscreen

rust in window surround too they all seem to get it

also look for cracks in the window supports where they meet the doors

gear boxs are another thing too, mines got a reco in it but its really growly when loaded up

other than that 1hz is nice to drive after you have had anything else

thanks agian for all ya replies,

i have a question, a bloke at my work(while on hols from uni) will be selling his 75 ute soon(casue of the missis), the only thing is that its a 2h turbo

he did all the work on it him self (hes a heavy commercial diesel fitter)we are actually stripping it down for a bare metal respray- its got a reco'd engine and gearbox, 2 inch spring lift and bull and brush bars

its very clean, he wants round 10k for it

----------------------
i just dont know weather to wait for another one as i really wanted the 1hz, being a newer engine and such

Well at least with this one you know what has been done to it and who owned it and with the left over money you could spend it on tyres, lockers ect ect the list is endless.
But have a look around first......

.2 of a litre and about 20kw 50nm.
but a turbo would make the 2h more powerfull wind the boost to 12 psi throw on a intercooler and boost compensator.
plus i don't think the 2h has big end problem like the 1hz. as i know of a few guys who run 22psi on theres and they don't seem to break.

ive heard that in a lot of cases the 2Hturbo out performs the 1HZ if set up right. not to mention that with 2H u dont have to worry bout timing belts ;)

Well

i have a few more questions.

-what year did they go from the 60 series diffs to the smaller ones?
-is the difference between the diffs really that big?
-do they have a 1hz model with 60 series diffs

also

i ve been looking round and in some of the adds it calls them a t-top
what does that mean?

thanks heaps

-1990 i think
-depends how hard you drive it! the small diff will still be 10x stronger than your paj drivetrain
-not to my knowlege
-t-top: tray top

Unless you are running a V8 or tyres over 36+" [or driving like an idiot] you won't have any problems. There are things you can do to make the fornt HP diff stronger. I know of many people running 37-38" tyres that do hard stuff that have not had any problems. I have had several breakages with 37 MTRs and Krawlers but only on hard to extreme terrain [with 4.88 gears]. For the average guy running 35" with the 1HZ [even turboed] will not have any problems. Shout if you want to know more….

Cheers

Hi NCpaj

I have a '93 1HZ Tray Back, with the factory a/c and power steer you were after. Also has a big list of other mods like 3-4 inch suspension lift 33" BFG Mud tyres, bullbar, new steel tray, toolboxes, snorkel, duel batteries, CD stacker, UHF, winch, driving lights and more.

Has about 268,000 on the clock and is still going strong. Serviced every 5000km. Rear Diff and Transfer Case bearings replaced about 6 months ago.

Havent advertised the car at all yet, but it sounded just like what you were after so thought I would post it up.

I live on the VIC/NSW border though, so a fair way from you, but if your interested give me a yell and I can e-mail you some pictures to you.

Cheers,

Phil.

aren't the small front diffs stronger when going forward but weaker in reverse because of the high pinion?? i give mine heaps and have only smashed one front diff (smashed 3 rears and countless cv's in same time)but have had no problems at all since putting an air locker in. i'm just carefull in reverse.
