It is really worth doing if you get it cheap enough.
They are roughly 12% lower geared than the 1.3 t-case.
You will love the difference, but if its costly to do, then transfer gearing or diffs may be better option.
Mine was great with a 1.3 into 1.o t-case and diffs with 30's, but 31's became ok to good, now I have 32's I needed more gearing, so I did diff gears (not a cheap option for 1.3 but mines a 1.0)

Yes the 1L transfer should be enough reduction to turn 31's. But if using for crawling purposes not sure if it will be enough reduction. I myself have 6.5:1 gears with 31's and it crawls awsome. Depends on how much $$ u want to spend.

Agree with christova, it is a lot better than std as thats what i am running and have for a while in the old zook. Was great, low suffered still but liveable. Get it cheep otherwise order some gears. (about <$250 i think is worthwhile)

thankx for the replies guys
was talkin with a mate today and he also made a good point that the 1lt transfers are all very old and unless they've been reco'd the bearings n stuff won't b doin so good. ne 1 had problems like this?
my idea is to use my stock'o tyres to get to work and back and the 31's for playing, would a 12% reduction in high range make it really bad to drive with the stock wheels. top speed reached to get to and from work is about 80

Should be good for you decision i think. u will end up running 31s all the time prob as cbf changing them over.
never had any probs with mine, front input bearing is noisy in mine but i believe from mud .
low is about the 12 lower i think also than a 1.3 one.

Re: dd
I sold mine fully recoed with only 1000k's since the reco mid last year for $250 which i thought was pretty good value. Take into consideration that if you buy a cheap worn one for say $100, its going to cost you bout $300-350 if it needs a full reco of all bearings and seals. Thats getting someone to do it for you though.Daniel wrote:Helloo,

Nathan, forgot to say the other day when I talked to you bout this...watch out for people trying to sell you an early 1L case without the 4wd light switch on it. I think the ones with the switch on them were made from roughly 83 to very early 85? I'm sure someone like christover or podge would be able to tell you exactly if you ask them. The problem lies not in the switch but the fact that the input and output shafts have a different spline to the NT and WT 1.3L's and are not interchangable meaning you have to cut yokes on the driveshaft and reweld and stuff around and i think maybe even make new transfer mounts? and its just not worth it. The later 1L cases with the switch have the same spline and all you have to do is swap your WT flange from your transfer onto the new one as the driveshaft bolt pattern is different. But a simple swap nonetheless.
After all that though...I'd personally just save for gears or got the rocklobster like DAVO29 said...quite a few have done it with great results and I think theres a link in the bible for it.
John.
