Anyone done an XR6 turbo conversion in a SWB Mav/Patrol?.

Post by cruiserkid »

I am currently going through the process of converting my SWB Maverick to an XR6 Turbo engine and 6 speed automatic transmission.
Has anyone done this conversion yet or am I the first?.
I was going to Turbo my 4.2 petrol engine, but I thought about by the time I set a decent turbo up and built my engine strong enough it would cost me $10,000-$15,000.
The XR6 Turbo engines come out standard with 245kw and just with a chip I can boost it up to 300kw for the same price.

Does anyone know anything I should be looking out for with these engines?.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I work at Marks 4wd Adaptors.
We are discussing the conversion at the moment.
I want to keep the automatic, but we have to get a motor and transmission and see what we can make up.
Advance Adapters dont have any products to suit the Nissan transfer case.
I may need to just use my 5 speed manual.
But I would like to use the auto, it would be better in the comps.
Especially with the sequential shift.

why in the world would it cost u 10-15000 to turbo a tb42??? if u spend that much u will have way more hp/kw than the xr6 conversion u thinking bout. im doin a straight gas turbo set up on my tb42 and by tghe time ive finished, including repairing a cracked head or gasket, wont cost more than 3000 dependin on how bad the head is. if u go out and buy new everything and get custom made stuff u would shit urself to spend 5grand max....

I always tought for a turbo/intercooled setup by the time you get computer, turbo, intercooler, modded intake, coil packs and all the little shit. Things where being quoted as upwards of $10 000. Thats drive in drive out though.
I know for drive in drive out, I am looking at atleast $7000 for a td42.

but arent the transmissions a GETRAG or some thing from germany . he wants to use the 6 speed auto for the sequntial shift . if he put it in front of the patrol manual box that wouldnt be a prob as there is a adaptor for that. but the german box to patrol transfer case i dont know about.

I'm curious as to how well these box's (ford/holden auto's behind v8/turbo's) handle the extra weight and abuse of a 4wd?

Your coing to need some serious time with an auto elec and a pretty spiffy aftermarket engine mamagement computer to get it all running properly .. the XR6engine and powertrain has more sensors than the startship enterprise ..

wireing up the engine wouldent be hard with aftermarket gear but geting the 6speed to do what you want would be a real nightmare. and why not a devorced transfer?

Meh, just need to use the standard engine management and adapt the speed sensor

Can't find anything capable of running the 4spd aftermarket without spending mega, need to use the standard management

Juzza's non response was because of Alberto's (onpatrol) thread on the subject in Aug-05.

If you and your colleagues don't feel like making an adapter from scratch, just use the extension housing off the Nissan 5-speed and bolt a thick aluminium plate to the front of it. Drill that plate to suit the tail of the auto and machine it for a seal.
I'd just cut and shut the Nissan gearbox output shaft to the Ford tailshaft splines to make a coupler shaft, but you can probably do something a bit nicer than that with the machinery at your disposal

Getting the computer to buzz along happily is gonna be interesting!

6speed has its own ecu so you would need to use all the loom from a falcon and the main ecu uses some can bus system to run all the gauges and shit so all the gauges are operated throu the ecu and lots of other crap not realy as simple as it sounds
