i just had my car to outback 4x4 and they did some work on my fj40 82mdl and they told me that my swivel hub bearings and seals have gone.
they quoted me $800 to replace the bearings and seals and a wheel alingment.
is this price ok as it seems a bit heigh and the bill they gave me for the other work seemed quite heigh aswell?
anyone had the swivel hubs done before? how much did it cost?
thanks clint

around 500 seems to be the go at most places. Does that alignment include king pin shims? because that involves a special tool. I payed a so called truck & bus place to do that on my cruiser, yet there is still a vibration (with hubs locked in) and the swivel bearings have play in them (after 50,000k's or so). There's also a several hundred dollar hole in my wallet
Im here for the sausage!
Dude where are you from??
and what front brakes etc are you running??
i dunno if it would help you, but i have a whole front drum diff you could have cheap, its in newy though so if your ages away obviously no good to you?
that sounds hideously expensive.

i replaced my wheel bearings/cvs n stuff on my own late last year.. i think with bearings, swival hub kit and new cv's it cost around $400 (got some quality CV's) for the parts, then spent the weekend (and a few nights during the week) ripping it all out, cleaning it up and replacing bits.. i would think a large portion of that cost is labour.
It only took me as long as it did because I couldn't get that bloody circlip on that goes inside the CV.. otherwise it would of only taken the weekend to do.
I didnt use any special tools and got my mechanic to check over it once I had finished.. so far so good and its probably done 10-15,000km's on em. its good now cos I know how to replace a CV should one happen to bust out in the bush.
If you can do it yourself and learn a heap along the way...

just replaced my swivel hub bearings and seals on my FJ40 last week and cost me $100 for the kit and around $30 in grease and that was that, most of the cost would be labour, it took me a few days but that was thoroughly cleaning all the parts and then i had to clean out all the wheel cylinders because my brakes were hardly working so i done that while i was there, there is a good link i can show you which has a step by step process on how to do it yourself, very good guide and very easy to do, once the first side is done the second is easy, its just the cleaning and regreasing that takes the longest.
