3y/4y rebuild/swap

Post by dawg runner »

Gday,

Just bought myself a 85 runner with a 3y engine. 300000kms

Just wanted to see how many kms people have seen these engines do before breaking.

Does anyone also know anywhere in NSW that has a good stock pile of these motors (y series in general) or parts for these motors?

Thinking about getting a blown up one now and rebuilding it so when the other dies i can put the new engine straight in. I want to stay with the y series engine so i do not have to mod anything too much. Can i get a blown 4ye with injection and rebuild that to bolt in. Just for alittle bit more power going up the big hills.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks guys

Dave

i had a 4y for a while. afaik they are tough as old boots, can do big km's on them.

there is a 3y-e version (in surfs not sure what else) so you can get all fuel injection gear off it.

Good reliable high k engine if they are looked after.
Don't bother rebuilding one. You can buy brand new 4Y long motors in a crate for less than 1500 bones from memory.. Check around engine places for a price.

Thanks guys.

I spoke to a guy who sells them brand new for $1500 on the gold coast.

As i said the 3 y has probably got more in her so i will just start putting some dollars away every week and then just grab one for a straight swap.

Cheers
