G'day Landie experts
Just about decided on a Defender as my next 4WD, to replace a petrol Paj which I love but it's a bit thirsty for touring.
What are some of the must-do mods for a Defender? I've lined up diff protectors, as it looks a bit vulnerable under the front, and I can't live without a tacho.
How do people cope with the battery under the seat, does it make life difficult when you want to for example connect a compressor?
Should I be looking at replacing the seats?
Is the ABS a problem offroad, or is it disabled in low range?
Any help appreciated.

From what I remember the Seats are OK it's just the clutch i didn't like that much.
Fit the A/C unit under the front RHS wing (grate spot for it!!)
As far as ABS goes in Victoria it is classed as a driving "aid" not a "necessity" so you don't have to have it working for a road worthy...
Which i read as pull the fuse out when you don't need it or wire up a switch. I think the traction control is more of an issue anyway but if you disable the ABS the traction goes with it (did in my Rangie anyway)

Theres an auto interior company in Vic that makes sports seats to suit a defender, with a removable baseso you can still access you batteries

yep... diff guards are a very good idea..
there is a great spot for an ARB compressor under the black plastic cover on D/S wing... a real bitch to get in but hidden and out of harm and muds way..
I would fit a kill switch for the ABS which would also disable the ETC... which sucks in sand and mud
don't forget that your ECU is under the drivers seat... either seal this area up VERY VERY well or move the ECU, which would be the better option
chuck a locker and some new shafts in the rear and get a proper spare wheel carrier, even better secure the spare in the rear of the car.. fits nicely between the wheel wells...
the seats are suprisingly comfy, it is the lack of right elbow room that is the problem....oh and get used to the idea of having no hair on your lower left leg as the handbrake rubs all the hair off..... nearly 1 year on and still don't have any hair there

amv make a really good and easy to fit front diff protector.
bullbars can be gotton cheap at landy wreckers, but make sure you use larger bolts though-arb skinped on this part
defenders need a front recovery point too, the factory one is weak as piss
stratos ,eds and arb all make seats for the offender
rangie spares have a real good deal on twin sill tanks at the moment
don't get a long range tank, its too much weight behind the axle.
i believe arb make a roofrack thats the full length (windscreen to rear door)
