I think you'd have to seriously chop the guards too with 37-38's

I'd go 6x2 lift with that size tyre

you will have to buy a box of grinder wheels.

you will also need to space the diffs forward to center them in the arch

talkin with Lockee last night about this, you will break lots of things with 38's...

I would say go 4" if it a ute or 3" if it is a swb. If you go for 6+2 then you would be lookin at a total of 11.5" of lift including tyres. That is a hell of a lot of lift.

With mine i took off 35mm off the gaurds i followed the factory line on the gaurd. ive got 2-3" of lift with a 60mm packer in the rear bumpstop and it didnt scrub. The front didnt need any bump stop changes.I also have some 12mm BBM radius arm spacers You also have too remember that the more lift you have the less down travel you will have due to the shitty front arm chassis bush.If you keep the lift too 4" there is no need for stuff like hysteer .Remember lift is overated you dont need all that much lift in a shorty. ig you go 3" lift and 38s you are going too gain 7.5" of clearence unter the chassis.

and yes on 38s you will break stuff

I wheeled the piss out of my shorty on 37"s and never had a problem with hubs nor cv's ( although the CV's did have a ring welded around them to stop the bell spreading and breaking ;) )

i run 38's under my GQ, extracab, im running 6" lift, i have 3rds arms up front, i have cut a bit out of my guards and that it,

i have owned the truckfor 2 years, one year as a shorty, on 35's, we did willoglen and nissan trials, and abit of other hard weekend wheeling, then we did willowglen on 36's, weekend wheelin on 38's then nissan trials on 38's and we ended up breaking a CV at trials, but like i say the CV's had coped 2 yeas of abuse on different tyres, and the only reason we broke one was a wheel in the air on the gas when it landed,

CV's are pretty strong,

Just outta curiousity, how big a tyre can you go without chopping the gaurd??
Was thinking of putting bigger tyres than my 33's on my 6" lifted rig, but I really couldn't be bothered chopping the gaurds. I'm on the tools for a living, and the last thing I want to do in my own time is get on the tools

being realistic the 35's are about max if you do not want to chop ya guards and add bump stops to reduce flex, I run 35's on a 6" spring lift and the rears will jam up in the wheel arches when wheelin.....and like some of the posts before, I would rather cut my guards than go any higher in lift.....

i have 6" coil and 2" body and i had to chop the back of the rear guards out by 2" even after i had chopped the 1/4's even now they only just clear. Front is no dramas at all, it's the back thats causing problems.

re:fitting 38's

Post by Nelso »

I've just dropped mine to 5 + 2 and will soon be taking out my body lift as it's not needed and I run 37's. I couldn't go any lower than 5" with my drop radius arms otherwise I'd go down to a total of 4 inches only and then trim the guards a bit more.

You will need to run spacers in the front to move your diff forward 20mm and your better off running 20mm longer lower rear control arms to move the rear axle back as well as the tyres fit into the wheel tub easier back there. Once you chop the quarters, take the back of your rear arches about 40mm and they'll clear. Trim guards like zook60 or mud_runner_GQ and you'll fit 38's with a 4 inch lift easy.

A mate of mine never breaks anything running his 37 MTR's (either do I)but as soon as he runs his 38 swampers he starts breaking CV's without trying.
