Turbo Guru's needed

Post by Maggot4x4 »

I will be putting a turbo on my 4BD1 (3.9L 4cyl Diesel, 3200rpm Red line) soon, and was thinking about a Garrett T28.

What are peoples thoughts?

Would think that is ok since you have a bigger engine than I have.

Have a T28/T25 hybrid on my GQ 2,8, around 200 hp, working fine.

Boost starts at 1300 rpm and max boost, 15 psi, at 1950 rpm.

My T28 compressor wheel is 46mm I think, dunno the turbine wheel size.

I think Dougal (posts in rover forum) fitted a T28 to his 4BD1 and had some issues with it not spooling up soon enough (from memory).

You should send him a pm as he could give yuo better info.

I'm thinking of another turbo, T28 or similar size for my 4BD1, but I have a lot of other things to and the time will give me a good chance to evaluate the Garrett VNT turbo on my 300TDi.

From everything I have read they spool up at about 1100-1200 RPM and are at maximum boost about 2100rpm.

Given that the truck sits at about 1600 - 1800 rpm in 5th on the freeway I would have thought this would be a good match.

I only really want the turbo for on road work. Off road it's fine as it is.

It seems I'm over a year late in joining this forum. (I am Dougal)

I tried a T25 (same exh turbine as the T28, but smaller compressor wheel) on my 4BD1T.
At the time my engine was quite sick, dodgy parts in a previous rebuild.
My T25 started to spool about 1400rpm but didn't provide 15psi boost until 2500rpm. It did however provide great fuel economy, about 1.5km/l better than the factory IHI turbo.

I rebuilt the T25 with a smaller T2 exhaust housing and wheel.
The low end response was great, but it was too small. At full revs (3500) I had over 60psi backpressure in the exhaust manifold. The T25 would give 30psi in the same conditions.

The T2/T25 hybrid died when the oil feed line came apart, actually it died exactly a week later on exactly the same piece of road where the oil line came apart.

I have since rebuilt my engine with good parts and am contemplating doing it all again to see what the difference will be.
