AN EVENT WITH A DIFFERENCE!

Always wanted to do an event that doesn't cost you an arm and a leg? And do it when you want to! It's here!
The Springs 4x4 Open Challenge is applicable to all 4 wheelers. It will be focussed on the average 4 wheel driver rather than the "extremer". The Open would be an Individual event and split into three classes. It will be run on a "Squash Ladder" basis. All 4 wheel drivers who come to the Springs 4x4 for a camping weekend or for a day run can try the competition tracks. ($10 per vehicle) Each competitor will be timed on three runs, (with penalties etc..), and the aggregate of their times entered into a League table. The top ten of each class will qualify for the Finals. You may enter as many times as you like over the period of the Ladder but not more than twice in a day. There will be a starting date for the Ladder, (Feb !st) and a closing date (TBA probably end May). Finals to be held in June. The Class qualifiers for the Finals will be the ones with the best points score. The tracks selected for the Ladder will be standard Springs 4x4 "very difficult tracks" with extra escape tracks built, (that have penalties associated with them), for particular areas where some 4 wheelers may not wish to attempt. The idea behind this is to minimise any damage to vehicles but still allow you to be able to compete in an event. This event will be starting from the first week in February with the Finals being held in June. Rules can be found on the website

5 General Rules.

5a. The event is open to all road registered 4 wheel off road vehicles types providing the vehicle currently was or was previously sold to the general public by a manufacturer. No prototype vehicles are allowed.

5b. Unusual or extraordinary 4 wheel off road vehicles will not be considered for entry. Any vehicle failing to comply with any of the rules and regulations contained in this event guide is required to apply for an exemption in writing to the Event Committee, stating the regulations the vehicle fails to comply with. Each request will be considered on its merits. An exemption will only be granted when the event committee is satisfied that the vehicle has no unfair advantage over the other competing teams/vehicles and no safety aspects have been ignored. Failing to comply with an exemption prior to the vehicle and equipment check will exclude the participant from starting the event.


I gather this rules us out, or any other competitive vehicle?

Yep fraid so. There are already loads of events for you guys. Trying to do something different for the general fourbie market. Maybe longer term we'll do something in the customised arena. But if we do it will be different. Sorreee

If they win just wee on their door handles i reckon! or prawn heads down the air vents.
I personally think good on the seasoned person, it will stop people from wondering the old line "i can drive as good as that bloke he just has a big expensive truck"
it will level the playing field.
wont draw a huge spectator base, but im sure there be a fair few people to have a look.

You asked how would a seasoned competitor do? Same as the other bloke...it's a stokko car..he's not gonna stomp on the right foot but he knows the line for HIS car...may even do better than the comp guy as he knows what his stokko will do...comp guy in stokko may not want to do damage...Don't knock the guys that don't do comps...some of them do extremet type tracks in a vehicle that is really not capable...but the driver is! There's a lot of experience in stock fourbies out there! However it will be interesting to see the "comp" vs the "Norm" LOL Thats the idea....try it and see how you go!
As to drawing spectators...I think u may be wrong...it's interesting to see what a normal car can do...they roll the same they drive the same...just different components to them

Sorry Ian i think you mis-understood my question. Looks like a few others did as well. Im actually of the opinion that a seasond competitor shouldnt be competing in an event like this at all. Stock rig or Modified rig. Unless they were possibly just doing an exhibition run. Possibly to give some of the new guys an idea of what can be driven in a stocko and give them more idea of lines to choose.

Most competitors have a much better feel for any rig and also choose much better lines. I dont think its a question of strength. Most will break less because they have much more idea on what it takes to break.

I think a comp suited to new commers is really needed and it realy should be limited to new commers. There are a lot of guys out there that would not compete in this if they thought they were up against seasoned competitors. Yeah they all like to say they could drive better than the other guy but when it comes down to it most realy dont want to have to prove it.

I also agrea. In a final event this should draw a lot of spectators.

To me it sounds like the qualifying attempts to get into this FINAL event can be done at any time. Not on specific comp dates?

Almost impossible to stop...because u just don't know who is a comp man!...interestingly though, I did a reasonable amount of research to this and most people don't mind competing against"seasoned" competitors as this gives them a yardstick to test themselves against. It doesn't seem to be winning in this case its just having the ability to compete and having a place that lets u compete against all comers. The name of the game is fun and then saying..." I did better than blah blah who competes all the time"

I also do agree with the concept, but the overall criteria being based on personal discretion is one to be debated. For example, say my misses wanted to compete, i have just bought her an 82 lux stocker, but it has very few mods , BUT they are in the right spots ( chromo cv's, crawler gear, 33" IROK's and a full flat bash plate) the car sits on STD springs and shocks (well the springs are actually reaaaaly sagged , so it is lower than factory).
So this rig is way less modified than most, and is waaaaay cheaper than most, but if she drives and wins, then she will be disqualified, due to a judging "panel". I don't really see how this will be fair.

I like the idea of the comp, but my word of advice is to just be very strict with the modifications allowed in each category, and this totally eliminates the confusion and dramas later. The comps that are very successfull DO enforce strict vehicle modification rules eg. XWC XRCC, WEROCK, ATECO . . . .
Another word of advice, is that a timed event does not promote good driving, rather it allows the stronger vehicles to dominate and the crazy drivers to go all out, which looks spectacular but is not rewarding for the lesser modified rigs. A well thought out points system with progressive bonus's is much more rewarding as an up an comer, due to the course's and obstacles getting harder as the tracks progress.

But either way i would still love to come and watch, it is always great to here people getting behind the sport!

I can't find anything about a judging panel in the Rues which are on the website. Can u expand?

I think it would be kewl for seasoned competitors to come and watch and pass on some experience to others... maybe at the end of a drive, they could give hints and tips on how to have cleared that stage easier and with less damage. Would give some people more confidence.

Hey Ian hey Toni.

Awesome concept Ian , competeing in an event with comp hardened drivers in stock rigs , but the bit about running it over a number of months to allow people to attend , thats brilliant. Well done. I agree with the rules thing , stick to your guns and dont change the rules for the comp at any stage. (experience) Modify them for the next comp if you continue to run them , and I think you will. Its a fabulous idea.

I get the point that Tony is trying to cross , but I like it. Two Tickford road V8 Falcons on Willowbank one for Craig L. and one for the average joe , could be fun. Either a steep learning curve or a big upset , who knows. Imagine a full of it bike rider from the coast and Rossi on a pair of 250's down Numinbar Valley and Back. Interesting!! (I wont make a 4wd analagy)

One thing Ian , do your homework on insurance , anything timed may become a problem. I come from Off Road and Rally background since I was 12 and insurance is a killer. If you want some contacts and advice drop me a line , If you are all sorted then its all good. Its not hard , but you have to ask the right questions and get the right answer in writing.

Finally , I love the FUN attitude. People loose sight of that aspect of an entry level event. Its about learning , socialising and FUN !!

Thanks Peter .insurance already sorted and in writing...did it last year with this in mind...
I also like the idea of some seasoned people passing on tips. Would only be possible at the Finals though...so when I firm up on a date for them hopefully some of you guys may volunteer!

Sorry, should have used your terms, " event committee ".
only reason i have commented on stringent rules is that it stops the main detracting factor of competitions, wherein the "committee" ever faced with a legitimate protest is usually made up of members with personal interest in the dispute. Therefore fairness within "flexible" or "open" rules is not possible. I must admit it is great for the average tinkerer out there to modify his rig to enter a comp that they envoy, and not be ridiculed by others due to jealousy, or an inbalance in funds! (not that we have any $$, we competed for 2 years with welded diffs till we could save up enough to buy an air locker)

keep up the brainstorming and i am sure you can make it a top event for all! :cry:

Like any Comp be it 4wd or external (ie in life) you always need rules and then a panel, committee or individual, call it what u may, that u can apply to look at dramas. The good thing about a Park running a Comp is that personally I have no preconception or interest in the competitors be they male or female. I haven't been around long enough! If the car has kept to the rules they will win on points and its as simple as that. Jealousy does not even enter the equation. Rules are rules and as owner of the Park I will see they are followed.
I have no idea of what has occurred to you before at other comps but believe me this comp will be straight, honest and fun, and THAT IS THE WAY IT SHOULD BE!

Hey Ian

count me in. A question, my truck has 2 inch springs, and 2 " shackles, does that rule me out as it's not a engineerable mod? although really in the big scheme of things it's not the biggest most involved mod out there.

Also, if we pay the entry fee twice can my navi enter himself as a driver too and have a go also?

finally, i work out of town a lot. if i enter in the first event and end up being at work for the next event is that a drama. I'm not really expecting to get a placing, i just want to have a run in a comp environment.

Got any firmer dates for the first event?
