Vitara Gearbox ratios

Post by Beastmavster »

Anyone know what model Vitara's came out with the 0.864 5th gear and which ones came out with the 0.795 5th gear?

Alsohow the heck do you tell the difference between em when you have a spare gearbox you've picked up from somewhere?

My 88 Softtop appears to be 0.864 which is slightly too short for dual transfercase on 31"s. I have a spare box but dunno what ratio it's 5th gear is.

Help would be greatly appreciated.

I spent some time last week recording my speed and revs in my V6 vitara and using the factory specs nothing seems to add up.The V6 models should have a 0.795 5th gear but it seems lower to me. I’m not really sure Suzuki know what parts they threw together, the service guys are very reluctant to sell you anything without the VIN number and the old part to compare.

Well testing on the road got me 16% between4th and 5th which is closest to the 0.864 box.

I think the EFI's should have the 0.795 box in which case my spare should have that ratio but I can't tell without sticking it in or pulling it apart. Most frustrating.

I know that a 92 1.6efi LWB has the higher ratio 5th, and a 91 1.6 SWB carb model has the lower ratio 5th. I know because I changed boxes to help with 31's in 5th on my old vitara.

I still have a lwb vitara box and xfer if someone wants it $100

Bargain..... I paid a lot more for my box/tcase and still thought it was cheap.

I have a 1993 EFI box and it should be 0.795 but I can't tell without installing it. Is there a serial number on yours that might hint to mine, or something else that was obviosuly different?

I'd buy it but I think 12uke got there first and I suspect mine is 0.795 anyway.

I don't need 3 Vitara boxes at this stage :D

12uke if you're running stock 0.795 gearing on yours with 31"s you might want the 0.864 short box out of mine instead. If you buy his I'll swap ya ;D

I changed the box just for the lower 5th gear ratio to compensate for the larger tyres, did it because I got the box cheap and it was really low k's and I was putting in a new clutch so why not. 12uke it is the .864 box you have.

Viagra, I can right down the serial number and you can look for any similarities but I am not aware of any id's in the number.

I cannot get rid of this xfer, I origionaly was going to use it behind a 1.6 in a sierra dual boxes but changed by mind and went with rockhopper

Got the serial number it is M287966 that is the only number on the entire gearbox and xfer case assembly. it is on top behind the belhousing on the flat surface. 795 is pretty close to 796, 879 is a little further of 864 although I beleive this box is definatly .795
