easiest way to replace clutch

Hey all,

My clutch went over the past two days - started making a clicking sound, a whining sound, and no no gear - fortunately I am home :D

But how to replace?

Do I drop the gearbox and transfer out - or lift out the motor??

I am working at home - in the driveway - I have ramps to put the car on (if I can nudge it up anyway! There might be enough left) or at least stands if I have to jack it up... That is for the gearbox. I don't have an engine hoist though (hence wanting to avoid that) - I would jave to buy\steal\beg\borrow one..

Any advice? @#$@# Car - It is on my bad side right now, but I just want to keep it running until it dies finally... You never know, might last a while yet :D

Just start it in gear and flat change :D

Undo the gearbox and transfer and get at the clutch that way. Easier than taking the motor out.

I think there was some posts about easy ways to remove gearboxes etc...

i have done one also and i agree pay someone. less heartache

Lots of custom gear as I cant afford the proper stuff.

I did my rocky clutch and found it easier to pull the motor out (diesel).
borrowed mate engine hoist and it only took about 1.5 to get the motor out by myself. Took the fly wheel to get machined ,cleaned the motor and repainted it.
my mate helped but it back in and was driving it that afternoon.
i only did it that way after helping my mate do his hilux by pulling the gear box out. :bad-words:


Either way its still sucs.

Rocky gearboxes are steel cased, Ferozas are alloy and weigh in a LOT less. Remove the gearbox/ transfer and do it that way. ;)

I paid someone else to do mine recently- $200 for a H/D clutch kit plus labour. Can't give an exact labour cost as mine was done at the same time as my gearbox rebuild.

If you need to ask questions on how to do it then I'd suggest paying a mechanic. It's not something that's easy to do and you could end up wearing the gearbox/ transfer case if something goes wrong!!! Aligning the gearbox input shaft into the clutch can be a right PITA going by other people's experiences on here too.

thx for the advice all.

Local mechanic wants $350 for the clutch kit (seems a bit exy!) and 350-400 for the labour and misc (machining, oil seal, etc). I have replaced the motor before as well as strip the second motor and rebuild the head - whilst I haven't done a clutch nefore, I am at least game...

My motor is also not so hot anymore - so spending $750 is a bit tough! I wll see if I can get a cheaper replacement kit and go from there :D

But if it is going to cost $750, with rego next month, i might just strip and sell the @#$@# thing. 2 years of pain and it still is causing more!!

I changed clutch in 2 hours on feroza, alone. I pulled motor out, changed the clutch and put the motor back.

Did you disconnect all the wiring stuff of the Feroza engine? Or did you lift it just a little in order to fit the clutch?

I think I will take the engine out - thanks all for the advice.

Reasons? I don't really have any helpers to get the gearbox back in - and last time I had the motor out it took me hours to mate the splines for some reason... I also don't like working under the car - I know, probably a wimp, but i will play it safe :D

Also with the changes I can pull the engine out in under an hour (done it three times now), so at least I know what I am doing - don't want to end up with stuff all out and not knowing how to get it back!

The diference between my feroza and yours is, that i have carburator version. Amd that i changed allmoust all screws on my car.

First 4 screws and engine cover pull down from the car - you have a lot more space and less work to pull motor out. Then exhaust (3 screws), radiator(4 screws), a few hoses(4 for water(radiator 2 and 2 for the heater) and 2 for gaseline), few wires(6 - 2 from battery and 1 for carburator and 1 for something else and 2 on gearbox). And 8screws between motor and gearbox.

You need max 1/2 hour to pull motor out, but you'll need a lot more tu put it together.

If it was a diesel Rocky I would take out motor and gearbox as one unit. Not sure with the Feroza.

If you need a hand just send me a PM. I don't have a engine hoist but I do have a block and tackle. In the last 2 years I have done 1 Rocky, 2 commodores and 2 skylines. My cars are all getting to that age when major things start to go wrong.

Underestimation of the century! Where did all that Aux stuff come from? Took me ages, probably about 3 :(

Also found bolt missing from the power steering, one of the 4 bolts that holds engine to tranny MISSING, two more loose, another bolt (cen't remember now) was also now MIA, oil dipstick falling out, engine mounts broken, and to top it off, when I put the new headers on I obviously stripped the thread :(

Man, this thing gonna be a pain to get back in, and I am sure I need that tranny bolt!

Why on earth do we own cars????????

Getting new clutch on Tuesday (thx mate) - but the old one doesn't look all that bad - must be the pressure bearing side (or I just can't see the fault). @#$# Car.

Oh well. With the $$$ I saved in doing the labour myself, I purchased an engine crane so I can do it again next time........

no probs mate, glad I could help another feroza owner out. I know how much it cost to keep one of these POS on the road.
