vitara low gearing???

Hi can somebody tell me the cheapest way to lower the gearing in vitara? im running 30" mud tyres but it seems to get away on steep downhills etc cheers

That's a Sierra thing....no good for you. The only other choice then if you don't want to spend money on gears is to run smaller tyres or don't drive down hills.

save for the 4.24:1, it will be hassle free int the long run, instead of some custom crap which will take ages to make and always have problems.

ok, so can anyone tell me what transfer reduction gears fit into a 97 j20a 5speed widetrack vitara
as im running 30x9.5 and find it frustrating not being able to crawl.

the "punch it" theory only works so many times.

i was'nt sure if it was posible, has anyone had experience with the trail tough transfer gears?

i thought i was going to have to change diff ratio's

I have a set of the Calmini one's in my 95 Vit 1.6.
Just make sure they do fit your model as I was told there are different boxes in some models.
I run 30x9.5 with standard diff ratio's and it fine.

A cheap and nasty way to lock the diff. Also known as a CIG locker. Very effective, but tends to attract a little attention on the bitumen roads with the tyres squealing on every corner at any speed

i had looked at the calmini gears, but from what i could work out the xfercase is different for the j20a???? can any one confirm this please.

as i can "walk" but i want to "crawl"

The gears don't fit the t-cases of the very early (pre '91) Vits or the manual 2.5 GV's and Xl-7's or any of the 5 speed autos. Other than that you're fine (except some of the diesel models overseas although the RF powered autos are fine).

I think he was refering to the "rocklobster" gearsets that are made from welding other gears from sierra transfers together.

yeah, i got 4.24 trail tough gears. i got them installed by someone else, had to take out a bit of the alloy housing for them to fit properly.

welding diffs is a different concept to what you are asking about.

In general, 'cheap' alternatives will end up costing you more money and time, due to unnecessary repairs, breakages etc. . Save the money up, get them installed professionally, and it will be trouble free. no hassles. If you are around brisbane, i can give you the contact details of a person who has now installed 2 of these gear sets, both of which have been used/thrashed and had no problems.

g'day ric,
its good to hear someone running these gears sounds like my only option to crawl. anyway i down in SA.... the state of no 4wd access. what sort of cost on the installation of the gears pm me if ya want. do the trail tough gears reduce HI range?

the only way to get reduction in high range is to change the diff ratios. the only ones i know of are the calmini 5.83:1 ratios. have not tried them.

from memory around 300-400 to get it done. and no, the gears won't reduce the high range.

I just gave my Calmini crawler gears a real workout at LMP.
Havenâ€™t really taken the Vit out for much 4WDing since installing them.
We did a few of the extreme tracks and when very well.
One of the best mods I have done to the Vit.
